Joseph Dickey Obituary

North Lima-Joseph H. Dickey, Jr. was called to be with his Lord on Friday, June 28, 2024, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Joe was born on March 9, 1929 in Youngstown, Ohio and was active in Boy Scouts and 6 man football throughout his school days. He joined the US Marine Corps and served as a Marine during World War II.

Joe had a mind for business and built Dickey Electric from the ground up starting in 1957 after purchasing a truck and equipment from a former one man electrical contractor. He continued to expand, opening Dickey Supply in 1970 and Generator Specialist in 1974. Joe was a family man through and through - devoting time and love to his family while simultaneously creating and growing these companies.

Throughout his life, Joe was dedicated to contributing to the community through various boards and organizations. He was honored to serve on the Canfield Fair Board, the Beaver Ruritan Club, the National Electrical Contractor Association, the Academy of Electrical Contractors, the Red Cross Board, the Butler Art Board, the Allen Masonic Lodge 276, the Scottish Rite Mahoning Valley 33rd degree, the Youngstown Shrine Club, the VFW Post 2799, American Legion, and many, many more. Throughout his life, he was honored for his contributions.

Joe was a true pillar of the community. His generosity was legendary - he was generous with his time, his love, his talents and his money. Joe lived his 95 years to the absolute fullest and had many incredible stories to tell. From eating three dozen bananas to meet the weight requirement to join the US Marine Corps, to riding the white rapids in New Zealand at age 82 with his dear friend Clarence Smith, he always kept you entertained. He had an uncanny ability to make every person he met feel important and special. He was proud of his kids and grandkids and would sing their praises as loudly as he could. He gave love freely and abundantly. To use one of his favorite phrases, “He was a helluva guy.” There will never be another Joe Dickey, Jr. He may be gone, but his legacy lives on through his family, his friends, and the impact he made on his community.

He was preceded in death by his late wives Catherine, Elsie and Ellen; as well as his sons, Paul Dickey and Joseph Dickey, III; and three grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Karen (Roger) Cole, Nancy (Greg) Miller, David (Dawn) Dickey, Patricia Dickey, and Kevin (Jill) Dickey; daughter-in-law, Debbie Dickey; stepdaughters, Pam Dunham and Penny Hannum; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; his companion, Dolores Zins; brother, Arnold Dickey; and countless beloved extended family and friends.

In accordance with Joe’s wishes, private services were held on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at Mount Olivet United Church of Christ in North Lima with Rev. Bruce Rhodes, Jr. officiating. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of the organizations that were important to Joe throughout his life: Mount Olivet United Church of Christ, 410 W. South Range Road, North Lima, OH 44452 or to the Youngstown Shrine Club, 1735 W. South Range Road, North Lima, OH 44452.
