Nora McDeVitt Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN Nora Eileen McDevitt, 74, known to her friends and family as Nonie, died on Sunday September 28, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. She was born October 19, 1950, in Youngstown the daughter of William F. and Nora (Judge) Donahue. Nonie was a lifelong area resident and was of the Catholic faith. She was a 1968 Hubbard High School graduate, she graduated from Youngstown State University with her Bachelors and Masters in Education, and was a teacher at Youngstown City Schools, teaching grades 4, 5 and 6 in the gifted science program and coaching "Odyssey of the Mind". During her teaching career Nonie was named "Youngstown Teacher of the Year" for the 1994-95 school year. She was later named the "Gifted Teacher of the Year" for the State of Ohio. Other awards included the Ashland Award, the "Governor's Award for Excellence in Youth Science Opportunities" in 1991 and 1998, "Outstanding Educator" from the Industrial Information Institute and "Outstanding Energy Educator" from the East Ohio Gas Company. She loved taking her students on field trips to Camp Fitch to learn about nature and ecology. She would also take them to Washington, D.C. to learn about our national government. Nonie was a life member of the Outspoken Wheelmen Bicycle Club. She loved hiking, kayaking, camping with her family and geocaching. Since her retirement in 2016, she has been an avid quilter with TQGIBT (That Quilt Group I Belong To), enjoyed attending Hubbard High School Class of 1968 luncheons, and traveling and geocaching with her husband, Jim. Nonie married her loving husband James M. McDevitt on August 29, 1975, and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Nonie leaves her husband James; a son, Michael McDevitt; daughters, Lisa (Steve) McGann, Katie (Nik Braatz) McDevitt all of Columbus; brothers, Bill Donahue of Struthers, Tim (Sharon) Donahue of Hubbard; a sister, Marianne (Fred) Lee of Hubbard; her three grandchildren Norah and Fiona McGann, and Zelda Braatz. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Kathleen Flower and Dorothy Donahue. Friends and family may call Sunday October 5, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at The Kelley-Cummins Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 3:00 PM October 5, 2025, at The Kelley-Cummins Funeral home with Deacon John Bartos officiating. Arrangements are being handled by the Kelley-Cummins Funeral Home.
