Rosemarie Scarmack, 90, of Hermitage, passed away Sunday, September 4, 2022, in Hermitage Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Rosemarie was born January 11, 1932, in Farrell, a daughter of the late Andrew C. and Angeline D. (DiCello) Scarmack.
She attended the Farrell schools, and at age seventeen, answered God's call to become a religious sister and entered the Sisters of Mercy, Titusville. While in Titusville, Rosemarie attended Mercyhurst University, Erie, where she received her bachelor's in education. From 1953 to 1968, she taught religious education courses to students of all levels at many parochial schools in the Diocese of Erie.
In 1968, Rosemarie went on to teach in the Pittsburgh Public School system. During this time, she attended graduate courses at the University of Pittsburgh, ultimately earning her master's in education. She also received the honorary degree of "Teacher of the Year" in Pennsylvania in 1983.
Ms. Scarmack loved children and was a devoted teacher. She was dedicated to developing the character of her students and the enrichment of their lives. She loved helping people, young and old, and felt that was her purpose in life.
Rosemarie was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell. She was also a member of AARP, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, the Public School Employees Retirement System, the Mercer County Association of School Retirees, and the Farrell Alumni Association where she was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007 for her teaching methods and techniques.
She remained close to her religious life and never wandered away from her faith and beliefs.
Rosemarie enjoyed reading, watching classic movies on television, building jigsaw puzzles, bowling, needle working, and once in a while, a day at the casino. She looked forward to family poker night once a month and enjoyed meeting friends for breakfast and lunch.
Rosemarie is survived by her sister in-law, Kathleen Scarmack, Canfield, Ohio, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, Rosemarie was preceded in death by her sister, Amelia (Scarmack) Brumm; three brothers, Eugene, Vincent, and Andrew Scarmack; two sisters in-law, Helen "Toots" Scarmack and Dorothy Scarmack; a brother in-law, Dr. Lynn Brumm; two nephews Lynn Brumm, Jr., and Gerard Scarmack, and many loving relatives and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made in Rosemarie's name to Our Lady of Fatima Church, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, or a
charity of the donor's choice.
Calling hour will be 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Saturday, September 10, 2022, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. in the church, with Rev. Matthew Ruyechan, pastor as celebrant.
Interment: St. Anthony's Cemetery, Hermitage.
