Douglas McCollum Obituary

Douglas Brent McCollum
Doug, 55, passed away Oct. 30, 2008, after a seven year battle with cancer. He was born March 28, 1953, in Portland, Ore., and grew up in Ashland, Ore. In 1971, he graduated from Ashland High School, and soon after moved to Alaska. He worked in Petersburg (fishing), north of Fairbanks (pipeline), and for many years in Anchorage (painting contractor). In 1981, married and with one child, Doug decided to return to civilization. For the next 5 years, he attended Portland State University full time, and worked full time. He graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. Doug was an engineer with the City of Portland for 22 years. His co-workers have been extraordinary in their support of him during his illness.
Doug enjoyed rafting and kayaking with family and friends. He traveled to many interesting places; Costa Rica, Mexico, Belize, Tahiti, and Italy (with his daughter Sophie). However, Portland was his favorite place to be.
Doug was preceded in death by his mother, Helen. He is survived by his two daughters, Caitlin and Sophie; their mother (and Doug's best friend), Patricia; his father John; his two brothers, Jeff and Marcus; his two sisters, Laurie Danley and Kerry Johnson; eight nieces and nephews; many close friends; and Sally (a good dog).
A memorial service has already been held. Those who are inclined are encouraged to make contributions to Compassion and Choices, 2066 NW Irving St. Suite 4, Portland OR 97210. The family encourages everyone to telephone or visit a friend, relative or complete stranger that would enjoy hearing from you. Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center, Milwaukie, Ore.

Doug, 55 years ago your parents asked June and I to be your godparents. We always tried to support your goals and were very happy when you decided to go back to school and earn your Civil Engineering degree

Doug,
Just thinking about you brings a smile to my face. Thank you for having such a great sense of humor, mixing in just a touch of irreverence. You proved for me that you truly can fight City Hall. I’ll miss you.

Doug - When I think of you, I remember a devoted and loving father of two beautiful daughters, a caring and compassionate son to a mother and father who created a home filled with love, the best brother a sibling could have, and a gentle and fun filled friend. I have always admired you, Doug.
