Donald Dostie Obituary

Donald Maxime Dostie
1933 - 2016
BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - Donald Maxime Dostie, 82, formerly of Augusta, died peacefully on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016 at the Hernando Pasco Hospice Care Center in Brooksville.
Donald was a devout Roman Catholic and was a longtime member at both St. Frances Cabrini in Spring Hill, Fla. and St. Augustine Church in Augusta. He served at St. Augustine as President of the Parish Council and was a member of the finance committee. He was also a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, Rev. Fr. Cornelius A. Dougherty Assembly #1721.
Donald was born at 2:00 a.m. during a severe snow storm in his home on the second story of 18 ½ Kendall Street, Sand Hill, Augusta, Dec. 24,1933, to the late Alfred A. and Victoire (Dupuis) Dostie. He was delivered by Dr. Adolf Gingras after he walked through the snowstorm from his home nearby. He attended St. Augustine Catholic School and graduated from Cony High School in 1952 with honors. At 21 years of age after losing his father to an early death, he stayed with his mother helping to raise his younger sister Louise and younger brother Alfred. He was a veteran with the United States Army serving in Germany, May 14, 1956 to May 13, 1958, leaving service with the rank of SP3. He attended the University of Maine at Augusta and graduated from Williams Graduate School of Banking. He moved his family into the former home of Doc Gingras during the summer of 1968 where he and Bonnie raised their family; many were the family gatherings and parties with friends during that time. Donald was actively involved with the community, and in the political scene hosting events for several candidates in his home. He was a member of Le Club Calumet. Donald and his wife Bonnie retired to Brooksville, Fla. in 1996 from Rochester, N.H. and have lived there ever since.
Donald began his lengthy banking career working with Depositor's Trust as a teller soon after graduating from Cony, later working with the F.D.I.C. until being asked to be Executive Vice President, then Bank President and CEO of the Dirigo Bank & Trust Company from 1973-1979. During this period he opened the popular Northern Ave. branch on Sand Hill. Thereafter he became the General Manager of NRF Distributors and worked as an independent financial advisor for IDS/American Express. Donald later retired from the FDIC after rejoining them as a Senior Bank Examiner during the Savings and Loan crisis of the 1990's. In retirement, unable to stay away from the financial world, Donald was Senior Associate of Maximis Consulting working with his brother Alfred to consult various banks. He served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Brookridge community where he lived.
Donald was preceded in death by his sister Rita Jean. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Bonnie I. (Dill) Dostie, of Brooksville, Fla.; son Donald Edward Dostie and his wife Thanchanok (Diny) Dostie of Lewiston, daughters, Michelle Louise Dostie of Lewiston, Angela Anne (Dostie) Jamieson of Sabattus, and Monique Marie (Dostie) DeRoche and her husband Dean DeRoche of Alton, NH.
Donald is also survived by his grandchildren, Erin Marie Dostie, Brianna Leigh Dostie, Benjamin Joseph Dostie, Tyler Ross Dostie, Ashley (Jamieson) Cole, Bruce Matthew Jamieson, Christopher Donald Jamieson, Dominic Robert Jamieson, Jill Rae (DeRoche) Williams, Dean Robert DeRoche, Maxim Alexander DeRoche, and Abigail Sarah DeRoche.
Don will be greatly missed by his siblings: brothers, Clement O. Dostie of Belgrade, Alfred C. Dostie of Rowlett, Texas, and sisters, Madeleine (Dostie) Dube of Winslow, and Louise (Dostie) Redman of Augusta. Donald is survived by many more family members, godchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, Pépère, Uncle and friend. He was always ready with a joke, laugh, song, or dance, the life of any party while there to help his family and friends when in need. He was selfless and always trying to keep in touch with his family and friends, whether it was driving to Waterville treating aunts to a lunch characterized by laughter or helping the local unfortunate in his community. Don had the biggest and most generous heart of any man, may God bless and keep him.
Relatives and friends may visit on Friday, April 29 from 6-8 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Memorial Mass will also be held in Augusta, on Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta. I have so many fond memories of Uncle Donald! They begin when I was very young and the family got together at Memere's apartment on Kendall St. Since Uncle Don's birthday was on Christmas Eve, we had to celebrate his birthday before opening presents. I really liked that! After singing Happy Birthday, the other fun French songs started! This was my favorite part of all family get togethers. Uncle Don always greeted us with a big smile! He was such a kind and thoughtful man. Even as a very shy young girl, he made me feel at ease! He brought so much "joie de vivre" whenever he was around! Uncle Don you will be greatly missed!

The best Godfather a girl could hope for. I still have a little 14 K gold heart shaped locket he gave me as a child. Always thoughtful, he sent me holiday and birthday cards right up until his illness. He was such an intelligent man with a wonderful sense of humor. He could converse on any topic and I loved being part of (or witnessing) political debates between him and my dad. One favorite memory....having dinner in "Mexico" at Disney with him and then going to the gift shop where he and my husband posed for pictures in giant
sombreros. Missing him now and forever.

Little Don

March 1, 2016

Many nights my father would come into my room, lay his cool hand on my forehead saying "my poor son" when I would be sick or after having words with me earlier in the day. The deep love I felt for my father during those times as a little boy is as strong now if not stronger. Dad would always joke with me as the years went by asking "are you ready to be the Daddy?" You see he had to be the Daddy when his father died leaving Uncle Alfred as a young boy and Aunt Louise, a young teenager behind. Dad, at 19 became their father. No, I'm not ready, but lucky for us Dad lived a long and happy life so I didn't have to fill in for him.
I love you Dad and always, always will.

One memory from my childhood that is extra special to me is remembering the trip to the Oblates with Uncle Don and Aunt Bonnie. You took Angela and I to choose a special rosary because we were making our first communion together. A also cherish the memories of the many Christmas Eve celebrations held at Memere's and then your home. I absolutely loved it when the Uncles would start singing French Christmas Caroles at the top of their lungs. You will be lovingly missed always...Jennie
