READFIELD - Hope Perkins passed away peacefully at sunrise Sunday morning, at her home in Readfield, after a brief illness.
She was born in Hallowell to Benton and Cora (Wright) Boothby, and attended Hallowell schools. Hope moved to Pasadena, Calif., after graduating from Hallowell High School in 1941, with her parents. While she made many friends and memories, one of her proudest was working in the lab at Cal Tech for Nobel Prize winner, Linus Pauling. She worked on oxygen sensors that allowed submarines to more accurately navigate. Hope was also asked to work in a secret government lab, which she declined. Later, finding that it was for the Atomic Bomb, she was glad that she had declined. She received a letter of thank you from the government.
In 1943, Hope married Thomas G. Frost, of Winthrop, at the Pasadena Wedding Chapel. While in California they often enjoyed games at the Rose Bowl, golf and visiting family members in the mountains. After the war they returned to New England to start a family, eventually settling in Winthrop and having four children.
Hope worked for many years for Community Service Phone Company and was a member of the Professional Business Women and the Winthrop Congregational Church.
On Jan. 1, 1991, Hope married George H. Perkins, with whom she enjoyed retirement, sharing their hearts and families until George's death in 1997.
Hope is survived by her children, Barbara Damren and her husband, John, Glen Frost and his wife, Stephanie, Darren Frost and his companion, Cathy Rush; stepdaughters Cathy Dow, Cynthia Passamore and her husband, Dennis, and Cheryl Bilodeau; grandchildren Nick and Jon Viti, Sam, Carrie and Will Frost, and Josh and Dana Rush; her stepgrandchildren Scott, Tommy, Jason, Gary, Todd and Jennifer.
She was predeceased by her parents, Benton and Cora Boothby; brothers Lloyd, Maynard, Kenneth and Bernard Boothby, and by her son, Thomas B. Frost.
A celebration of Hope's life will be held at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014.
