John Hachey Obituary

John R. Hachey
1947 - 2017
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - John R. Hachey, 69, died unexpectedly Feb. 25, 2017.
He was born in Waterville, to Joseph and Jeanette Casavant Hachey. John graduated from Winslow High School in 1965, and attended the University of Maine, Orono, from 1965-67 and then enlisted in the Army where he served three years, one of which was in Vietnam (1968-69). He then returned to the University and graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree. John and Rachel Joseph, of Fairfield, were married in January 1971. After obtaining his degree, he and Rachel moved to Portland, Ore., where John attended a graduate program in the geography of transportation at Portland State University. Subsequently, he was employed by the Port of Portland at their new container terminal and worked his way up to manager of operations for the Port.
John and Rachel lived and raised two sons, Joseph and Samuel, in Oregon and Washington until 2002, when John retired from the Port. For the next two years, John, Rachel and Sam, sailed the East coast and the Bahamas on their 44-foot sailboat.
Retiring to a life at sea was their lifelong dream. They loved every minute of it. In 2004, the couple moved from the sailboat to Anacortes, Wash., where John worked eight years as manager of port operations. Anacortes is a beautiful little town on the coast, where they were made to feel very welcome. While there, John was a member of the Rotary Club and Arts Festival.
In 2012, he retired again, to a home in Daytona Beach, Fla. He and Rachel loved their new home and made many friends in the golfing community.
Traveling was also a big part of their lives. In June of last year, they drove with a travel trailer to Alaska to visit their sons who now live there. They were gone three months and drove 15,000 miles.
John was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, of Daytona Beach; sons, Joseph and Samuel, of Fairbanks, Alaska; sister, Nancy and her husband, David King, of Daytona Beach and Milbridge, Maine; brother, Robert Hachey and wife Romana Hejcova, of Herndon, Va., and Port Orange, Fla.; niece, Amy King, and her young son, Tobias Meeks, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and niece, Dr. Krista Hachey, of Watertown, Mass. He is also survived by uncles, Donald Casavant of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and George Casavant and wife, Kay, of Stockton, N.J.; and many cousins.
John was proud to be a lifetime member of both the VFW and American Legion. He was respected and loved by everyone who knew him.

I have thought of John many times since our high school days. I remember John as a very good friend. Hard to believe that it has been seven years since his passing.

A year really flies by, but I just happened to be thinking of John this week for some reason; and here is the reason. I am sorry I did not get to know him as an adult; he was always straight forward and honest with me, so I imagine that he was still the same in that way. Again, my condolences and thanks for the opportunity to add to John's memory.

To family & friends, I had the privilege of knowing John & Rachel for two years 70-72 after he returned to the Univ of Maine & Beta Theta Pi fraternity from military service. We both majored in Sociology. His acceptance & friendship of others is something I have never forgotten. My condolences to Rachel & his family.

Im so sorry to hear of John's passing. He was so kind to my family when we lost my husband, John (Pat) in 2007. John and Pat knew each other from the Port of Anacortes but held a special bond as Vietnam Veterans. John expressed that sentiment to me personally when Pat died and it meant so much to me. Rachel, I pray for your comfort and strength. There will come a time when the memories will bring smiles instead of tears.

I am saddened to hear of John's passing. He was a great brother of mine in Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and a great friend. I will always remember fondly those noontime games of whist at the House. May God bless you, John.

Dear Rachel & family--I was sorry to hear of John's passing. He and I were old buddies back in the 1960's even though we never went to school together. He was a very good friend to me. I will keep you all in my prayers. Gayle Picard Ropp
