Linwood "Red" "Kemo" Stephen Dunphy
1933 - 2018
PITTSFIELD - Linwood "Red" "Kemo" Stephen Dunphy, 84, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 8, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Pittsfield.
Red was born on July 19, 1933, in Burnham, the son of the late Hillis and Josephine (Reed) Dunphy. He graduated from Maine Central Institute with the class of 1950, and proudly served our country in the United States Army in Germany and in Korea. He was employed for over 55 years with Northeast Shoe and San Antonio Shoe in Pittsfield. He was a real estate broker and sold many homes in the Pittsfield area.
Red grew up very simply in Burnham, had a happy childhood and an excellent life. He married Dorothy "Dot" Lancaster on July 19, 1953, and they shared a wonderful married life together.
He loved music and was an accomplished trumpet player. He played with his band, the Nite Hawks, at the Bar-L Ranch for many years. He was always fascinated with HO trains and was an avid collector. He enjoyed his yearly snowmobile trips to Canada with his sons and friends.
In 1993, he achieved the Snowmobiler of the Year Award from the Maine Snowmobile Association. He had a great love for watching the Red Sox and Patriots, and umpired many years for the local Little League and Babe Ruth teams.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Dorothy "Dot" Dunphy, of Pittsfield; four children: Paul Dunphy of Clinton; James Dunphy and wife, Pamela, of Pittsfield; Colleen Martin and husband, Steve, of Pittsfield, and Roger Dunphy of Pittsfield; six grandchildren: Celeste Bellerose and husband, Jason; Steven Dunphy and wife, Maghan; Kory Martin and fiancée, Amy Bennett; Bradley Martin and fiancée, Gretchen Scholtz; Gavin Dunphy and companion, Samantha Turcotte; and Justine Dunphy; six great-grandchildren, Haley, Lauren, Brayden, Mada, Carli and Daisy; sister, Janice McGowan and husband Bob of Pittsfield; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; and three brothers, Richard Dunphy, John Dunphy and Reed Dunphy.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, May 10, 2018, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 11, at the funeral home, with Rev. Glenn Nichols officiating. A committal will immediately follow at the Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield, with military honors being presented for his service to our country.
