Madeline Metcalf Obituary

LEWISTON -- Madeline L. Metcalf, 86, of Lewiston and formerly of Jay, died peacefully Saturday morning, June 9, following an extended illness. She was surrounded by loved ones at d'Youville Pavilion in Lewiston.

She was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Vienna, the daughter of Harold and Matilda (Nickerson) Mason.

On June 24, 1939, she married Paul Metcalf, who died in September 1996. Madeline and Paul were married for 57 years and lived 25 of them in Jay. After Paul retired from the Otis Mill, they traveled across the United States. They made a stop in Salome, Ariz., where they lived for 17 years before returning to Grindstone Township (Millinocket) in 1993. She relocated back to Jay after Paul's death.

She loved being with her family, going fishing at that special place, Salmon Stream, and watching Nascar driver Rusty Wallace (race car number 2). She had flower gardens wherever she lived. She was a past communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wilton.

She is survived by two daughters: Paula Olesen and her husband, Ron of Edinburg, Texas and Bonnie Mardosa and her fiancŽe Marty Thorne of Jay; three sons: Robert Metcalf of Jay, David Metcalf and his wife, Delores of Amado, Ariz. and Dale Metcalf and his wife, Nola of Warren; four elder sisters: Edna Davis of Farmington, Nellie Howe of Farmington, Linda Hastings of Vienna and Lillian White of Canton; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by five siblings: Mary Bowie, Hezekiah Mason, Norman Mason, Ernest Trask and Goldie Easter.

Words cannot express our appreciation to the staff of 3 East for all the loving care, hugs and kisses given to Madeline during her five years at d'Youville Pavilion. Our gratitude to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for the love and comfort provided and the all night vigil.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road (Routes 2 and 27), Farmington, on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Middle St., Farmington, with Rev. Roger Chabot officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Farmington.

Those who desire may give gifts in her memory to AHCH, 75 Allen St., Wilton, ME 04294. Online condolences may be sent to [email protected].
