She worked many years at the Augusta General Hospital, as it was known then. When the state of Maine opened the First Aid Room in the John Cross Office Building she was the first nurse to staff it. The last 15 years of her career, Peggy served as a public health nurse for the City of Augusta.
After retiring she enjoyed traveling the United States and many places abroad. Peggy filled her spare time by volunteering at the Maine Heart Association, the Maine Lung Association, the Manchester Elementary School, the Maranacook High School and the Lithgow Public Library. For her many hours of volunteer service, Peggy was nominated for the Jefferson Award in 1983. Knitting, cross-stitch and cross-word puzzles were her favorite hobbies. Never one to sit idle, Peggy completed an untold number of projects for her children and grandchildren.
Peggy was a longtime resident of Manchester and member of the Manchester Community Church, serving the church in the choir and many other functions. In her later years, she was a resident of the Inn at City Hall in Augusta.
She is survived by two sons, Dale C. Glidden, and his wife, Janice, of Winthrop, and David R. Glidden, and his wife, Pamela, of Readfield; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three nieces
At Peggy's request, there will not be any funeral service or visiting hours. There will be a simple, private family graveside committal service at Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta, later this fall.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Maine Parkinson Foundation, 359 Perry Road, Bangor, ME 04401.
Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta, where condolences, memories and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the website at www.khrfuner alhomes.com.

Our father was very close to Peggy and had so many happy memories of their youth together. He was just delighted to be able to reconnect in his later years and shared many happy visits at her home in Maine. Dad thought the world of Peggy and I was delighted to meet her at my nephew's wedding 8 years ago. I lovely, bright and interesting woman.

My deepest sympathies go out to your family. She was always so very kind and generous. I spent lots of time with her and Uncle Bing when I was young. Enough so, my oldest has Margaret as her middle name. Again, my sincere sympathies.

So sorry, Dale and Jan. Your mom sounds like quite the overachiever! You must have been so proud of her. Hold your memories close to your heart.

A mother's love is like no other. May you all find peace and understanding that your mom is now at peace and, that, although she "took the long road home", she IS home and no longer suffering...til you meet again, your memories of her will be a gem in your treasure chest of life. God bless you all with much love and prayers.
