UNION -- Nancy Hubbard Whitney, 72, of Union died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at Brigham & Women's Medical Center in Boston after a valiant struggle with pulmonary disease.
Born in Boston on Dec. 16, 1934, she was the daughter of Paul S. and Gertrude (Hubbard) Hurlburt.
On June 18, 1977, she married William E. Whitney in Las Vegas.
For a number of years, Mr. and Mrs. Whitney worked in the Boston area and returned to their home in Union on the weekends. From 1986 to 2003, Nancy was the showroom manager for George & Frances Davison Inc., a wholesale business for interior designers and architects owned by Nancy's aunt, Frances, which was the first business to open in the Boston Design Center. She had also worked as a freelance bookkeeper for several businesses. More recently, Nancy had served as treasurer for the Rockland Cemetery Association through the law office of Edward Collins in Rockland.
Nancy was known for her strong work ethic, her dedication to the public and her unselfishness. Not being intimidated to solve problems, Nancy was always willing to research cemetery questions for families and funeral directors. Nancy had done charitable work with Altrusa USA, a philanthropy organization for women in business in Europe and the United States.
She was a member of the Maine chapter of the Buckskin Quarter Horse Association.
Surviving are her husband, William E. Whitney of Union; three sons, David E. Wiley of Lynchburg, Va., G. Scott Wiley and his wife, Joanne, of Scarborough, and F. Allen Wiley and his wife, Patricia, of Augusta; one daughter, Karen E. Lovejoy and her husband, Douglas, of Medford, Mass.; three stepchildren, William C. Whitney and his wife, Penny, of Belfast, Judith A. Whitney of South Portland, and Susan L. Schombert and her husband, Jeffrey, of Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Paul S. Hurlburt of Leesburg, Fla.; one sister, Sally C. Hurlburt of Waterville; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, James Whitney and his wife, Roberta, of Warren; a sister-in-law, Lillian Lewis, of Rockland; several nieces and nephews; and a cousin.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Francis A. Wiley, who died in 2006; and her aunt, Frances Davison.
Calling hours will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at John Street United Methodist Church, 98 John St., Camden. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden.
