Pamela Jean Curtis "Pam" Wentworth

Pamela Wentworth Obituary

VASSALBORO -- Surrounded by loved ones, Pamela (Pam) Jean Curtis Wentworth, 58, known as "the heart of her family," passed away on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, ending her courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. Her life was one unselfishly devoted to her family, friends and community.

Daughter of Flora and Fredrick Curtis Sr. of Prentiss, she was born on May 21, 1952, in Winterport. Pam was the middle child of seven children: sisters, Diana Roy, Carol Raymond, Sandra Phinney, Tammy Hersom, Belinda Raymond, and brother, Fredrick Curtis Jr. Pamela had a close bond to her siblings. It never failed that the Curtis Girls were up to something, living by the family motto "loving and living in the moment." Though for the "greater good," it was never long before the girls were dragging the family, their communities, and anyone else they could get their hands on into their latest passion. Pam never refused anyone in need.

Pam had a tireless, almost relentless, commitment to bettering the lives of others, even throughout the days of her illness. This culminated in being the 2010 recipient of the REM (Revitalize the Energy in ME) Community Award. The ceremony, to be held Jan. 15 at the Waterville Opera House, honors those who consistently contribute to the community through leadership, volunteerism, optimism and kindness of spirit. Pamela was truly a person who emitted a steady beacon of friendliness and compassion that warmed everyone she touched, a person described as having a "good heart." This was undoubtedly our daughter, sister, mother, aunt, wife, friend and colleague -- our Pam. Of all of her charitable and community activities, Maine's Children's Home was the closest to her heart. Pam served as past president and secretary of the 'Friends of' focusing on bettering the lives of children and young expectant mothers. Pam hoped one day to become a foster parent and often spoke of running a preschool.

Pam studied history and English at the University of Maine, in Orono and Machias, where she consistently made the Dean's List. A 1970 graduate of Lee Academy, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Girl's State, captain of the Majorettes and voted Senior Prom Queen. She devoted 37 years of her career to the law firm of Marden, Dubord, Bernier and Stevens in Waterville as a paralegal and legal assistant and involved herself in the National Association of Legal Secretaries. The firm became a second family to her. Though she considered everyone a friend, it was there she met the "bookends." Pam shared countless laughs with dearest friends Pamela Gilbert and Natalie Brooks, who ended her battle with cancer in September 2009.

Pam married Paul Wentworth, also of Vassalboro, in 1977. Of her life's many achievements, Pam considered her children to be the greatest; daughter Fawn Wentworth and son Forest Wentworth, both currently of Orono. Nothing gave her more joy than to support and celebrate the successes of her children and friends. She lived for her children and rejoiced in the birth of her grandchild, Brooke Lynn Wentworth, daughter of Forest and Nykki Moody. The bond between Brooke Lynn and her "Meme," who has 'gone to the sky' defines love in its purest form. After her divorce in 2000, her high school and college sweetheart, Wallace Alexander of Winslow, reentered her life. It became, and always will be, a family of seven.

She is described by others as a "rare gem," preferably an emerald for her love of green. Multifaceted, caring and compassionate. People were drawn to her through her overwhelmingly positive outlook on life. As a diehard Red Sox fan, and devout lover of the ocean, it never failed that if you "couldn't find her" she was either at Fenway or the cottage in Harpswell, enjoying the simple pleasures of this life with her family. Her life was a journey which was enjoyed and lived to the fullest.

Pam is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She left an inexhaustible list of friends, a true tribute to the person she chose to be. She was predeceased by her younger brother, Ricky Allan Curtis, 1958; as well as her grandparents; and many other beloved elders and friends of the family.

As a tribute to her and her love of spring, a celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011, which would have been her 59th birthday, at the former Oak Grove Chapel in Vassalboro. Though open to all that loved her, feel free to RSVP to [email protected]. In lieu of cards or flowers, please send donations in her memory to the Maine Children's Home, 93 Silver St., Waterville, ME 04901.

Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 107 Main St., Fairfield; (800) 660-2111.

There are not enough words to eloquently describe this beautiful daughter, sister, mother, meme and devoted friend. She gave of herself every single day. Pam was a life long & dedicated member of MDBS and for me (us) to all go on with out her will be difficult, but to go on is what we must do, because that is what she would expect of us. She would want us all to surround her "family of seven", her parents, siblings & families with love and support as she has done for all of us that were lucky enough to have her in our lives. She was beside Ray & I for every happy event, crisis, wedding and birthday celebration. She & Wally were a huge part of the "farm" in Albion. We grieved together when we lost our beloved Natalie and somehow knowing they are together is comforting. Our love to all of you, Pam (Bookend)& RayBee

It was my great honor and joy to come to know Pam through the Christmas Program at The Maine Children's Home. She was one of the most giving volunteers there. Whether it was her ever- reliable deliveries of donated Christmas items from her fellow law office employees or her countless hours doing whatever was needed to get hundreds of gift boxes packed for children of need, Pam's spirit of giving selflessly never failed to lift us all. Pam and I shared many a belly laugh as we worked, side by side, on our knees in the hallway of the MCH Development building, sorting (and counting!!) countless donated Christmas gifts. My life is richer, my spirit fuller for having known her. My thoughts and prayers to all her family.

The Broken Chain
Author: Ron Tranmer
We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

We Love You Pamela Jean, Always & Forever.

Dear Curtis family, Wentworth family and Wally,
Pam was such a sweetheart at such an early age in life. The first time I met her in elementary school, I wanted to be her friend for she always had that bright smile and was kind to everybody. I will cherish her friendship forever. Pam and Wally, and Bob and I were suppose to meet last summer for an outing but unfortunately, both Bob and she were just too ill. I bet they both are enjoying each others company in heaven, as they wait for Wally and I to come! Pam was a perfect model of how everybody should live. I wished that we could have been closer the last of her life. She will forever be in my heart as one of the special dear people that made a difference by living. God bless you all and know you are all in my prayers. Those of us that knew her were truly blessed. She will be greatly missed by many.
In prayer and love,
Patsy Thompson Dyer

My prayers are with all the family & friends that feel her loss. I have prayed for her everyday since the day I met her at the hospital and she told me of her illness. Her attitude was positive then and I know that she kept that attitude to the end. My heart aches for her family. She & I compared notes on our grandaughters..so very proud. I was so happy that she & Wally found each other again, after all these years and I hurt for him as he faces this loss. Everyone please know that you are always in my prayers.
A forever friend ...

Fawn, Forrest, Paul, Wally and Family - There are no right words to be spoken at this time, except I'm sorry. Pam was my widsom "go to" old crone. She taught me so much over the years about acceptance and openmindness. I was truly blessed to have her guidance and love over the years. She shall be missed. I am here for you all. Love the young crone (Elizabeth).

One word to describe Aunt Pam - AMAZING!
Her courage and her spirit in the face of cancer was an inspiration to all that knew her. Her love for her family and her kindness to others was unmeasurable. So loved and so missed by all...Curtis Courage will hold true til we all meet again Aunt Pam...

God chooses the most beautiful souls to share His kingdom and certainly Pam is one of those people. Why He would take her at such a young age from the many people she loved and who loved her only He knows, but how fortunate we were to have her with us. My heart goes out to her family, friends, colleagues and all those who will suffer from this loss.

Pam was a shining example of what it truly means to be a volunteer. She gave her time cheerfully and willingly, doing whatever was asked and never complaining when the task at hand was less than pleasant. As Volunteer Coordinator and Friends Advisor at The Maine Children's Home, I am forever grateful for her kind and generous spirit. It was an honor to have known her. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends.
