Richard Gibson Obituary

WAYNE -- At 8:40 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2009, our precious Ricky-Rick lost his last game. His opponent was a brutal merciless cancer, diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).

Ricky was born in Columbus, Ga., Jan. 23, 1993, the son of Richard Henry Jr. and Lisa (Huff) Gibson.

Ricky fought as long and as hard against this opponent as anyone possibly could. Although this game was to be uneven, unfair and the outcome almost certain from the start, our son fought this battle with a strength and determination that was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Ricky died with his love of life, sense of humor, and faith all intact. What an honor and a blessing it was to have such a gift from God the past 16 years.

Ricky will be missed most by his little brother, Jake and his parents, Rick and Lisa Gibson of Wayne. His maternal grandparents are Steve and Linda Huff of Winthrop. His paternal grandmother is Nancy Priest and paternal great-grandmother is Nadine Jones, both of Columbus.

Ricky's paternal grandfather, his namesake, was awaiting his arrival in heaven. Ricky was blessed with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends too numerous to name.

Ricky's fun-loving spirit and that beautiful, precious smile will be remembered and missed.

A celebration of Ricky's life will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at St. Francis Xavier Church, Route 133 Winthrop. There will be a light luncheon following the service in the church's Parish Hall.

The Gibson family extends sincere appreciation to the many, many people who have prayed for, loved, and supported them since September. A special thank-you to those who helped make Ricky's wish come true.

Memorial donations may be made to the Ricky Gibson Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Maranacook Football Inc., 517 Sturtevant Hill Road, Readfield, ME 04355.

Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.khrfuneral homes.com.

As parents, you must be so proud of what your son has accomplished in so little time. Ricky gave his other family which are his coaches and teammates a wonderful gift, a constant reminder of what a truely unselfish and caring young man he is and how much his football family and community meant to him. Ricky's perseverance and determination will shine on forever even after the lights are turned off, he has made a huge impact on so many thousands of people and pulled at the heart strings of many. I hope that you can take comfort in kowing that you are truely blessed to have such a loving soul in your presence.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

We offer our deepest sympathy. When tragedy strikes and takes the life of our innocent loved ones, many cry out with great sorrow. Your tears are not unnoticed by the Creator of Life. Never was it his purpose for our human lives to be taken away. Although your deep pain will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. The Bible assures us God "is healing the broken hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spot."Psalm 147:3

Your family is in our thoughts. I am raising two young boys in this community, and I would just like to let Ricky's family know that while we do not know you personally, your son has had a tremendous impact on my boys and our family. For the short time that the spot light was on Ricky (or rather for the time that his light was shining so brightly from within) my boys witnessed and learned a great deal about the concepts of selflessness, school pride, community strength, and the power of being a part of a team.
I cannot imagine your pain, and I am so sorry for your loss. I hope in some way it brings your family comfort to know what a legacy of life-long lessons your son leaves behind.
