Roger Quirion Obituary

Roger Pierre Quirion
1913 - 2016
FALLS CHURCH, Va. - Roger P. Quirion, 102, died Feb. 20, 2016 at Inova Hospital in Falls Church, Va. He was born in Augusta on Oct. 8, 1913, the son of Pierre and Celina Quirion. He graduated from Cony High School, second in his class, and began a career with the Depositor's Trust Company (now Key Bank of Maine), starting as a bookkeeper and retiring in 1975 as Senior Vice President.
Mr. Quirion served in World War II as Technical Sergeant in the 76th U.S. Military Government operating in Japan after the Japanese surrender to help establish a constitutional government. He received a letter of commendation from General Robert L. Eichelberger, commander of the U.S. 8th Army. Because of a shortage of officers in 1945-46, Roger assumed duties and made decisions normally reserved for commissioned officers to ensure operational efficiency and the training of Japanese personnel to replace American servicemen going home.
While at the Depositor's Trust, Mr. Quirion taught summer banking courses at William College and was active in the community, serving as treasurer for the Community Chest, Salvation Army, Friends of Fort Western, Kennebec County March of Dimes, Cancer Drive, Girl Scouts, Boys Club and other fundraising and civic activities. He was a member of the Club Calumet and served as President of the Rotary Club.
Mr. Quirion and his late wife, Geraldine, retired to Florida and continued their community volunteer work at the Salvation Army and Mease Hospital of Clearwater.
Mr. Quirion is survived by his daughter Anne Connaughton of Virginia; two grandchildren Jacques Connaughton and Marie-Noëlle Connaughton of Virginia; and a sister-in law, Constance Pelletier of Maryland.
Mr. Quirion donated his body to the Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C. The medical students will organize a memorial mass to be celebrated after they have finished their course of study.
