Suzanne Cohen Obituary

Suzanne Burnett Cohen
1940 - 2015
HALLOWELL - Suzanne Burnett Cohen, 74, of Hallowell, died on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born in Paris, Ky. on Aug. 30, 1940, to Robert Thomas and Alberta Myers Burnett.
She attended and graduated from Paris High School and then moved to Boston, Mass., graduating from The Chamberlain School in 1960. She began her professional career working at Gilcrest's Department Store, followed by Filene's as an assistant buyer and assistant branch manager in Belmont, Mass.
In 1964, she moved to Hallowell and married Richard S. Cohen of Brookline, Mass., who went on to become Maine's 50th Attorney General and 35th US Attorney for the District of Maine. In her early and later years in Maine, she was the Hallowell correspondent for the Kennebec Journal newspaper, the co-owner of one of Maine's cooperative craft centers "The Christmas Stocking," a founding and lifelong member of Row House in Hallowell, a specialist for Children's Television Workshop in New York City, a long time volunteer and board member of the Maine Festival and was a member of the Italian Travel Promotion Council.
In 1972, after moving to Augusta and restoring an historic Winthrop Street house, she started as a volunteer at WCBB, the local public television station, which developed into a 22 year career, 17 of which were spent producing the Great TV Auction. While employed as the Producer of Special Events, she organized a Sesame Street Birthday themed birthday party for over 4,000 central Maine children, as well as the construction of a three-bedroom timber frame house, in Poland, that was sold to benefit the station.
Being entrepreneurial in spirit, an organizational wizard and passionate about European travel, she chose to make a mid-life career change by starting a specialty travel company in 1992, which acted as an agent for more than 200 Italian homeowner's wanting to rent their villas, houses and apartments in the central and northern regions of Italy. Additionally, her company represented properties and rental companies in Ireland and Great Brittan. In 2002, her company was internationally recognized and named one of The 25 Best Villa Rental Agencies in the World by Conde Nast magazine, a recognition that was maintained for well over a decade. The company has been featured in most of the nation's leading newspapers and travel magazines over the last 20 years.
In 2004, Suzanne moved back to Hallowell to a cottage-style home she helped to design and build, which was one of her greatest joys.
Suzanne was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her in-laws; and her beloved West Highland Terriers Katie, Max and Lizzie. She is survived by her son Andrew Stockman Cohen and his wife Ulrike Doehler of New York, N.Y., daughter Meredith Ware Cohen and her husband Steve Cain, and their children Hannah and Ailsa of Hallowell, and James Edward Wallace of Hallowell, a surrogate son since 1984 and his son Hagen (Joki) Wallace.
Visiting will be held Tuesday, March 3, from 4-7 p.m. at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street, Augusta. A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Hallowell. Time flies but you never forget the memories of old friends. The Cohen family were our friends since we moved to Maine in the 1969. I think we first met at a meeting of the Row House Historical society. I remember Dick saying very loudly "why don't you buy the entire Row House building ,which was what the meeting was mostly about. Mimi and I were taken back but we ended up buying the Row House building and our first and last effort in major restoration and establishing 10 units for rent-we never ended up moving in. (It was a long story.) So we were Hallowell landlords for a while. we were friends of the Cohens for ever. I worked with Suzanne on the toy auction for WCBB. Both our families took a trip together to Guadelope. She was a good Painted Horse customer. We always loved her annual garage sale. Suzanne was a major organizer of the reception following Mimi's funeral in March of 1981. A few years later Dick died, Our children married, and Suzanne grew this incredible European villa rental business. I have many wonderful memories of Suzanne and times spent with her at her home and the
terrific conversations and wonderful parties! Suzanne and the Cohen memories remain strong in my "golden years". I never thought I would say that. Phil Judd

My condolences and sincere sympathy to Suzanne's family and friends. Suzanne was a wonderful inspiration, I was lucky enough to have met her years ago in Florence. I drove her and Diane up to see Villa le Rose we had a good chat and a laugh and I continued working with her for years later. She will be greatly missed in Italy and always remembered - Linda Sorgiovanni

It was a blessing to know Suzanne and all of the Cohen family. We go back to 1966 when Mimi and I first meet your parents at the Row House meeting and Mimi and I ended up buying it. We wanted to buy two units and open up walls ..could not be done! Then your father shouted out "buy the whole thing and do what you want." At the time we thought that shocking but a week later that is exactly what we did! Those years, the trip to the Carribean, the Christmas parties, garage sales, good toys program on the great TV auction, your father's dry sense of humor. All these years. So glad I had the time visiting early spring(?) 2014. I had no sense that she would be leaving us. A great memory in my life, and Whit and Maggie's, a wonderful friend. A great loss. Love, Phil Judd

We were friends for over 40 years. There is so much to remember, from sitting at her kitchen table stuffing large quantities of envelopes with Villa Europe catalogs between talks and laughter, from lengthy telephone conversations, from sharing dinners in her home and traveling to Italy and England with her et al. We shared watching some of our favorite TV shows together by phone. I remember with delight the night we went to a movie just after it had started. The interior was dark, but Suzanne rushed down the aisle as I grabbed onto the back of her coat. She took a quick right, sat, and settled down on a complete stranger's lap. The man got out a quick "oommph" before she jumped up and backed up. Quickly. It was difficult to move, I was laughing so hard.

I continued following Suzanne forever and grabbing onto her coat. And what a ride. She is beloved.

Meredith and Family ~
Our deepest sympathy. Your mom was a wonderful lady and will be missed. We volunteered under her at WCBB ~ PBS for many years.
Know that, although we haven't seen her in recent years, she touched many hearts with her kindness.

Suzanne was an incredible person and she had this amazing ability to develop a persons hidden talents. I was one of the lucky ones to have had her do that for me.
She discovered me and told me that I was good at what I did at my work for the Great TV Auction so I WAS! She told me that I was good at renting villas.... so I WAS!! She told me that I could sit across the table from an Italian owner and hold my own... so I DID!!! Anything that she told you that you could do.....you did!
I was very lucky to have worked and "played" beside Suzanne for almost 30 years. Though we didn't get to "write the book" that we were always going to do, I will always have those adventures to remember.
Meredith, Andrew, and Jim, your mother was an amazing woman in so many ways!!!!I will miss my best friend so much!
