She graduated from Mount View High School in Thorndike.
She was a member of Fairfield First Baptist Church. She was retired from KSW Federal Credit Union because of the progression of the illness ALS.
Valerie was a person who had many interests. She loved to cook, garden and plan family gatherings and outdoor barbecues for friends and family. She loved to go motorcycle touring with family and friends, looking forward to vacations riding in the mountains down South with her husband and brother Larry and his wife, Audrey.
She is survived by her husband, Robert S. Costain; sons Joshua R. Costain and Benjamin R. Costain; grandson Jaden Costain; father-in-law Robert L. Costain; sister-in-law Sherry Gray and her husband, Gary; siblings Lawrence Pottle Jr. and his wife, Audrey, Janice Harmon, Allan Pottle, Gerry Pottle, Linda Douglas and her husband, Steve, Donald Pottle, and Yvonne Pottle; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and their families.
Valerie was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Hester Pottle; mother-in-law Betty May Costain; brother-in law Rodney Harmon; and nephew Jamie Pottle.
The family would like to thank Laurie Bourgoin and family, Audrey and Larry Pottle, Janice Harmon, Fairfield Pharmacy, Waterville Home Oxygen, HealthReach Hospice, Maine ALS association, Lahey ALS Clinic, and the nurses from Home, Hope and Healing for their support during her illness.
Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at First Baptist Church in Fairfield. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at First Baptist Church. Following the service, there will be a celebration of life at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family would like anyone wishing to make a donation in her honor to send contributions to the ALS Association Northern New England Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 309, Concord, NH 03301; or HealthReach Hospice, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903.

My prayers to the family. Val was a wonderful friend and mentor. She taught me so many things, I will cherish our memories forever. We laughed and giggled so hard our cheeks would hurt, I can still hear her laugh. I believe God needed her in Heaven and has plans for her, she will missed. I' m so glad to have had her in my life.
