Albert McKay Obituary

Albert 'Al' McKay, 73 SCARBOROUGH -- Albert 'Al' McKay, 73, of Scarborough, a loving husband and father died Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland after a brief illness; he was surrounded by his loving family. Al was born in Biddeford on Nov. 26, 1934, the son of Bertrum and Ruth McKay and was educated in area schools. Al was always a hard working man. His first job was working construction at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, he worked many years for the Portland Parks Department, and he also was in charge of runway maintenance at the Portland Jetport. After retirement Al continued to work part-time for many years at Portland Glass. Al was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed fishing at Camp Ellis. Later he acquired an interest in photography trading his gun for a camera, taking photos of wildlife and the out of doors. Al loved woodworking and staying on top of current events, and would entertain you with the trivia he learned. Al had a great sense of humor and he always had a story to tell that would put a smile on your face. Al was predeceased by twin sons, Albert Alan and Alan Albert; his mother Ruth, father Bertrum and sister Nancy Shorr. Al is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edwina (Cummings) McKay whom he married on Dec. 8, 1956. Also surviving are three sons, James A. McKay of Westbrook and his fiancée, Wanda Bruns, Gregory E. McKay of Portland, Timothy A. McKay and his wife Wendy-Jo also of Portland, one daughter, Linda L. McMann and her husband Michael McMann of Scarborough; and one sister, Shirley Dorr of Florida. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Al will sadly be missed by everyone who knew him, including his sister-in-law Louise Waterhouse of Scarborough, Al's best friend, Don Matthews of South Portland and especially baby. The family would also like to thank all that were involved in Al's care. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Congress Street, Portland, followed by a gathering for family and friends. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care, 471 Deering Ave., Portland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Al's memory to: The Animal Refuge League P.O. Box 336 Westbrook, Maine 04092 Albert 'Al' McKay

Uncle Al,
Over the years, I regularly thought back fondly to the times we shared fishing and exploring the outdoors in my youth- you will remain forever in my thoughts.May God bless your more immediate family. Your DASH through this world was a great one.

Al - although the years have separated us my love for you has never dissipated...and the times we've managed to get together have made me appreciate your wit, intelligence, sense of humor, and accomplishments even more, and has been reinforced. Your love of outdoor beauty and wildlife can't be surpassed and the pictures you captured could grace the National Geographic. I love you dearly - your 'OLDER' sister, Shirley...

We are so saddened to hear of the loss of "Uncle Albert"... Although it has been many, many years since we have seen him, we are family and know the ache & void that his family feels. Life does go on but it is forever changed... Please accept our condolences and take comfort in knowing that he is whole again and watching over you all from above. Be strong for each other and may God bless you all. [From Albert's sister's (Shirley's) middle daughter]

As a long time coworker of Jim and Al I miss talking with Al. Years ago after loosing my 12 year old parakeet Jim gave me his pet cockatiel "Big Boy". Al would greet me with "Morning Dave, how's the bird doing." And I would describe how he has it made, cage always open so he can fly around the house, or how complex his whistling is getting.
Well the bird is still doing fine and contributions to the Animal Refuge League is a great choice.
Our condolences to the family.
