NORTH YARMOUTH -- Albert Leonard Swanson Jr., 68, of North Yarmouth, died on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at home with his wife by his side. He was born on Jan. 21, 1945, in St. Marys, Pa., the son of Mary (Eggler) and Albert Leonard Swanson. He enjoyed scouting and he became an Eagle Scout.
After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, was trained as an electronics technician and was discharged from Brunswick NAS. He married Ruth Elizabeth Clemons in 1968 and together they had six children.
Al exemplified the meaning of being a dedicated employee by working at BIW for 40 years. He had a deep and abiding respect of the land and what it had to offer. He enjoyed being outdoors farming, gardening and all creatures great and small; and he liked to hunt. Al had a talent for woodworking and loved the beauty of wood, especially cherry from the family farm in Pennsylvania. He enjoyed reading, mostly history and about the Civil War.
Al is survived by his wife, Sally (Thorsen) Horton Swanson; his four sons, David B. Swanson and his wife Kathy of Helena, Mont., Albert L. Swanson III of Helena, Mont., Daniel B. Swanson and his wife Andrea of Yarmouth, Andrew E. Swanson and his partner Meagan of Portland, his daughter, Karen M. Davis and her husband Greg of Trenton; his step-daughter, Mary Ann Cleland and her husband Jeff of Spartanburg, S.C., his step-son, Mark Horton and his wife Mary of Old Town; his sister, Colleen Long of Johnsonburg, Pa., his brother, C. Fred Swanson of Johnsonburg, Pa.; his aunt, Jean Mann of Johnsonburg, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Al was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Swanson in 2004; his son, Richard Swanson; and his sister, Kathleen Jean Swanson.
A time of gathering and visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, from 5-7 p.m., at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m., at First Parish Congregational Church, 116 Main St., Yarmouth, with the Rev. Kate Dalton officiating.
