Ann Maiorano Obituary

Ann S. Maiorano, 97
SOUTH PORTLAND - Ann S. Maiorano 97, of South Portland, passed away at Gosnell Memorial Hospice in Scarborough, Jan. 27, 2017, following a period of failing health.
Ann was born in Portland on Sept. 8, 1919, to Gaetano and Concetta Decembrino Maiorano. She grew up on Deer Street in Portland's Little Italy neighborhood (Vine, Deer and Chatham Streets) and was extremely proud of her Italian heritage. She spoke fondly of "those days" and her life-long friendships. She became the family historian as her siblings passed on. She was extremely close to her family, especially her nieces Cetta, Marie and Honey (as she referred to as "my brother Jim's girls), who saw that she attend concerts, the theater, getting to where she needed to be and going out in general. She passed on to all her nieces and nephews family history, stories about growing up in Little Italy, nicknames and their meanings and phrases her mother would say in Italian.
Ann was a communicant of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and a member of the Sodality.
Ann graduated from Staples School 1933, Portland High School 1937, as well as Northeastern Business
College. She started her career at General Motors and retired from American Hoist & Derrick, Thomas Laughlin (Crosby/Laughlin Group) after 40+ years. In her younger days, she won several trophies for bowling. Ann was an avid reader of political thrillers, she excelled in crocheting and gave many of her "master pieces" to family and friends. She also enjoyed knitting and braiding rugs.
Ann enjoyed several cruises including one on the QE2, and she traveled to Canada on several occasions. She was fortunate enough to make two trips to Italy with her niece, Cetta. The second trip, sister Grace accompanied them. The highlight of that trip was visiting Vieste, birthplace of her parents. While in Vieste, they met and stayed with cousins who walked them around town and gave them a personal tour.
In addition to her parents, Gaetano (d. 1959) and Concetta (d. 1962), Ann was predeceased by eight siblings, as well as two nieces: Leo (d. 1944), Joseph (d. 1958) his wife Phyllis, Lucrezia (d. 1979), Pasquale (d. 1991) his wife Violet, James (d. 1998) his wife Josephine, Grace Napolitano (d. 2001) her husband Lawrence, Mary Amato (d. 2001) her husband Dominic, Samuel (d.2002) his wife Geneva; nieces Patricia (d. 2005) and Concetta L. (d. 2016).
Ann is survived by nieces and nephews, Concetta E. Maiorano Merola of Florida, Gaetano Maiorano of Connecticut, John Amato of New Hampshire, Michaelene Amato O'Brien of Portland, Leonardo A. Amato of Portland, Marie Maiorano Chenevert of Cape Elizabeth, Lucretia A. Maiorano Romano of Cape Elizabeth, Concetta G. Maiorano Montanese of Florida, Gaetano (Mike) Maiorano of South Portland,

Acknowledgement to Hospice of Southern Maine and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House of Scarborough for their extraordinary care of Ann.
