Catherine Stakel Obituary

Catherine Elizabeth Perry Stakel, 74
FALMOUTH
- Catherine Elizabeth Perry Stakel died on Oct. 14. Hers was a life filled with LOVE, travel, adventure and a multitude of activities which were exciting to her and her husband, CDR Robert (Bob) Stakel, USN ret. Born on Mother's Day, May 11, 1941, in St. Petersburg, Fla., she was the only child of her sweet mom Audrienne G. Perry. They moved to Miami and boarded with a loving couple who included them as part of their extended family. Cathy was pre-schooled at the local YMHA (Young Men's Hebrew Association), followed by Shenandoah Elementary for three years, Citrus Grove Elementary and Jr. High through ninth grade, and Miami Senior High, graduating in 1959. Throughout her school years, Cathy and her mother attended Central Presbyterian Church, where she began development of a deeply spiritual life. By 16, she was teaching Sunday School, a choir member, and a member of the Christian Ed. evening program.
After working in the high school health clinic under the caring direction of Laura Conner, RN, (later - Kershaw), who served as an inspiration to her, she went on to Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, and became a nursing instructor after moving north to Buffalo, N.Y., to continue schooling.
While she had started runway and photographic modeling, her real love was teaching. Days were devoted to the nursing school and evenings to teaching posture, posing, and runway walking.
In the late 60s, Lt. Bob Stakel suddenly sailed into her life, and after several dates, enduring his year in Vietnam, they married within four months of his return. Their first assignment was Washington, D.C., where their first son, John Nobles Stakel, was born. From there they transferred to the beautiful seaside town of Newport, R.I., had other port assignments, experienced the birth of second son David Christopher, and spent an amazing three years in Gaeta, Italy. A final tour in Virginia Beach, and with Bob at the 20 year point, he retired from the Navy to become a stockbroker, moving the family to Maine.
As their sons grew, Cathy found much to do in the richness of life in Portland. With a number of friends she took the four year course of Education for Ministry, as well as a year course in CPE - the chaplaincy program at Maine Medical Center; 13 years at the Bowdoin College Jung Seminar with Prof. William Geoghegan, her idol. One of the most special of studies was a two year program,
A Course in Miracles
, with dearest friend Lu Clark. Ongoing education had her auditing 18 hours at Bangor Theological Seminary which brought her to the conclusion that the Priesthood was NOT her direction. At this point she was introduced to the art program at Vermont College. In what seemed a magical moment she touched clay and WAS CAPTURED. For 20 years the lure, feel, and art of clay kept her for hours in her huge barn studio. When home, husband and sons became frequent subjects. Others sat for a bust that was theirs to take home.
Life was sweet! Some years earlier she had had a four month period of breast cancer, and in the summer of 2012 it was back. Taking a seeming gentle path over the next two and a half years, and THEN……
A statement from Cathy: Not everyone is as lucky or happy as I! I've loved my life, my family. They are ALL so beautiful to me. My husband Robert Wallace Stakel, our sons John Nobles Stakel, his wife whom I love as if she were my child, Susan Andrews Stakel, their children Ruby Anna Stakel (6) and Lyla Drew Stakel (4), David Christopher Stakel, his wife Danielle, whom I love as if she were my child, Corinne Elizabeth Stakel (5), Nora Grace Stakel (3), Cole Robert Stakel (1 year). Our goddaughter Jenifer Dean, her daughter Penny Catherine Hartman (7). This is a wonderful and loving family.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Falmouth, at 3 p.m., Oct. 24, 2015.

I was truly honored to be asked to sing my song "Pilot Light" at Cathy's service this past Saturday. In my mind and heart, I know that Cathy is a keeper of the flame, a spirit whose pilot light was and always will be burning brightly. When my light flickers, I will look to the sky. Thank you Cathy for reminding us all of what is important in life. Shine on my friend... I love you, Anni

Bob and family,
Cathy and I were JMH roommates and her smile remained the same through the years.
Her talents and faith were so evident in her sculptures.
She loved her family and shared so many memories through the years.
Keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers .

First, my condolences to Bob, Sons, "Daughters" and Grandchildren - your loss is great.

Memories could fill many guest books. We knew each other for 53 years - from the time we began nursing school and we were part of a "gang of eight". Through transfers and marriages we became the "Four Musketeers" by the time we were juniors. Three months of psych affiliation were a real bonding experience. We were able to remain friends across the years and miles apart. We visited in person several times, and phone calls and emails were a blessing. I will miss her. She joins Vel in heaven - and now there are Two.

Cathy and I spent several years in Italy exploring and discovering, sometimes with John and David and my daughter Tanya. I thought it was the place that made those experiences so magical, but much of it was Cathy - great friend for over thirty years, great mother, wife, sculptor, and world class person.

Condolences to Bob, John and David.I know how much you will miss her.

We were classmates in Nursing School.
In the last 4-5 years, we have been in touch frequently.

Cathy was filled with a caring and compassionate heart for all.
She was smart, talented, gentle, and loved and adored her family with passion and joy.

We shared pictures of Grandchidren, and she was thrilled to visit her newest Grandson.

I was a convert to the Christian Faith at age 21 and we shared our faith through many emails. I thank God for her friendship and love.

Our deepest heartfelt condolences to Bob and her precious family. You will remain in our prayers each day,
Dave and Fran Nielsen

Cathy, you wrote in our 1962 yearbook, "Think of all that we have come thru....It's been so much fun knowing you." It meant so much to me at that time.
I thank God that he gave us the past months to renew our friendship. I will truly miss our "chats". Heaven is getting a very special lady. I,also, know in my heart that you have had a wonderful life and a loving family.
God has blessed us and may He bless your family and friends. With much love, Billy
