Charles Millington Obituary

Charles J. Millington, 93 SOUTH PORTLAND -- Charles J. Millington Jr., 93, late of Scarborough, passed peacefully surrounded by family at the Maine Veteran's Home on Feb. 1, 2009. Born May 3, 1915, to Charles and Elizabeth Millington, he was raised on Kincaid St. in the Ferry Village section of South Portland. A lifelong resident of South Portland, Charlie's fond memories included working at the refreshment shack at Willard Beach and traveling to other Maine towns to help run beano games. At South Portland High School he played on the football team. Upon graduation in 1935, he worked at the South Portland Shipyard until he was drafted into the Navy where he served with the See Bees for two years in Eastern Europe; returning home to his wife Mary and his two children, John and Marie. Charlie supported his family by working the next 30 years for the United States Postal Service. Prior to his retirement in 1975, he was a supervisor in the postal motor vehicle department. Charlie always enjoyed being with his family and friends. Throughout life he concentrated on his two passions: family and sports. Charlie attended every local activity and sporting event possible offering support to his children, grandchildren and, most recently, to his great-grandchildren. Friends to the Hayes and Millington families all knew him as 'Bubba.' Active until the end, his role as a four season spectator and No.1 fan never wavered. He was always there and he was always cheering. In retirement he became an avid golfer and played in many local leagues over the years. Eventually he became a snowbird and began golfing and walking the beaches in Florida. In recent years, Elizabeth Macleod of Scarborough and Ft. Myers, Fla., was his companion. He will be remembered as Charlie, Charles, Harry and Bubba and for his stories, his golfing, collecting golf balls, always wearing a baseball cap, making chocolate cream pies, being on a beach, finding four leaf clovers, having candy in his pocket, holding your hand, nightly phone calls, marriage advice, and family Christmas eve parties. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Mary Amabile Millington, in 1995; his son, John Anthony Millington in 1998; and his four sisters, Elizabeth Rice, Emily Sullivan, Jane Foley and Alice Murphy. He is survived by his daughter, Marie Hayes and her husband Waldo of Cape Elizabeth; his grandchildren Suzanne Posey and her husband John of Scarborough, Mark Millington and his wife Stacy of Portugal, Michael Hayes and his wife Lisa of Tampa, Fla., Samantha Labrie and her husband John of Cape Elizabeth, Elizabeth Police and her husband Josh of Westwood, Mass., Scott Millington, Kevin Millington and Sarah Millington all of South Portland. He is also survived by his former daughter-in-law, Sheila Carmichael and her husband Herb of Scarborough; and his eight great- grandchildren, Michael, Jenna and Jack Posey, Nathan and Joey Labrie, Zach and Jared Hayes, and John Millington. As requested there will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church, South Portland on Friday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery South Portland. Arrangements made by the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland.

To the Millington Family - Although we are in Florida and unable to attend the service for Charlie we wanted you to know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers.
As one of John's good friends growing up I got to know Charlie and Mary quite well. I ate lots of "italian" meals at their home during my sleepovers. Charlie always made me feel right at home.

Mary-Jean and I have many fond memories of the Millington family.

Thinking of you,Ken and Mary-Jean Leary

Charlie was a wonderful man and his cheery disposition on life made such an impact on me that it has altered the way I view things. He has a loving family and was so good to my grandmother. He was truly special; I doubt I will ever meet someone who could find a four-leaf clover as effortlessly as he could.
