Daan Troost Obituary

Daan Troost, 85
CAPE PORPOISE - Daan Troost, 85, of Cape Porpoise, died on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, at the Gosnell Memorial Hos-pice House, in Scarborough. He was born in Wageningen, The Nether-lands, on Oct. 16, 1932, the younger son of Laurens and Martha (Versluys) Troost. His formative years in The Netherlands included living under the German occupation from 1940 to 1945. Following high school, he immigrated to the United States to attend M.I.T., where his father was chair of the naval architecture department. Daan graduated in 1957 with a double major in business and metallurgy.
He married Morven Donald after graduation, and following a short stint in the U.S. Army, he started his first job as a metallurgist with Fafnir Bearing Company in New Britain, Conn. The family moved to Maine in 1966, where Daan worked as a project engineer until his retirement in 1986. Early in his retirement years, Daan spent some time at Ocean National Bank.
For many years, Daan enjoyed his small sailboat, moored in Cape Porpoise harbor. He also enjoyed canoeing, hiking and camping with his children. In later years he walked in Cape Porpoise almost every day.
Daan was an active Scottish country dancer for many years. They made many friends in the Scottish country dance community in New England and beyond. When their elder daughter, Ellie, was tragically killed in 1995, they found in this group, great support and compassion. After 13 years as empty nesters, they became parents again to Ellie's son, Will.
Daan served on the board of the Maine M.I.T. Alumni Club as well as the Arundel Cemetery committee for many years. Daan enjoyed many years of traveling with his wife, Morven. Music was another interest they shared.
He had a deep affection for Cape Porpoise and for the "fixer upper" which they bought in 1971 and lived in for 46 years.
Daan was predeceased by his wife, Morven; his elder daughter, Ellie; and by his brother, Marius.
He is survived by his son, Neil, of Portsmouth, N.H.; his daughter, Karen Bragdon, of Wells; and his grandchildren, Will Jennes, of Rochester, N.Y.; Ian Troost, of Portsmouth, N.H.; and Ben and Hannah Bragdon, of Wells.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.
