Dean Evans Obituary
GORHAM - Dean Willis Evans, 86, passed away on July 24, 2018 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Belgrade Lakes. Dean was born on July 7, 1932 to Clyde Willis Evans and Evelyn Robiero Evans Cotton. He married Jane Smearer and they made their home and raised their son in Gorham.
Dean was a high school teacher for more than 30 years at Gorham High School where he was also the Athletic Director for 17 years. He served on the Gorham Town Council and Planning Board. He found his passion in coaching and mentoring the many children that passed through the school halls. He had a gift to know when a child needed to be involved in a team, have a home cooked meal at his home, or just words of encouragement. He opened doors for kids of all abilities enabling them to participate in sports where no one "rode the bench". And beneath it all was a sense that Dean's greater mission was to help build individual discipline and character.
Dean coached numerous basketball and cross country teams to State Championships, was named Coach of the Year three times, named Athletic Director of the Year in 1985, and he was inducted into the Maine Running Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2001 he was also bestowed the honor of having the Gorham High School gymnasium renamed the Dean Evans Gymnasium.
The family camp on Sebago Lake was Dean's slice of heaven and many summers were spent there creating family memories. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandsons.
An avid fisherman as well, he started the Kiwanis Club Kids Annual Fishing Derby. Later in life as golf became his passion, in true Dean Evans style, he became a past president as well as board member of the Maine State Golf Association. Dean and Jane enjoyed many winter months in Myrtle Beach with other golf enthusiasts.
Dean was predeceased by his parents and his beloved wife. He is survived by his son, Kyle George Evans and his wife, Marjorie, from Belgrade Lakes; grandson, Tyler Dean Evans and his wife, Kristen, from Belgrade Lakes; grandson, Rees Clifford Evans and his partner, Jennifer Rees, of Coplin Plantation; great-grandson, Kyle Owen Evans of Belgrade Lakes; and sister-in-law, Sarah Rioux of Gorham; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Dean was a quiet man, unassuming, gentle, practical, and always a steadfast friend. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 20, 2018 at Gorham High School in the Dean Evans Gymnasium. A private burial for family members will follow. When I think Of Dean Evans I reflect on the great memories from the 68 basketball season at GHS. His coaching style made playing for him a joy. You worked hard because you respected the man and wanted to get better. I tried to emulate Dean through out my coaching days. He will be missed.

Kyle, our thoughts are with you and your family. I will miss seeing your dad and making him his stuffed peppers. Our family enjoyed having him over for dinner and listening to his stories. I hope he and your mom are out there swinging their golf clubs! Sincerely Julie & John Micucci

Kyle and Family,
My father passed recently. Not sure what to write. When people said "Sorry for your loss" I replied he lived an incredible life.
Dean Evans was an inspiration to me at GHS. Dean saw everything with his students. Comedy especially. Dean always looked at me with this Cheshire Cat Grin.
He saw the light in his students.

Very fitting to have this at GHS gym since "Mr.Evans" was a defining influence on so many of us there. I especially loved it that he adopted girls sports in such a big way - it was ground breaking in the late 1970's and early 80's. We often got the late game slot on Friday nights and we got great jackets and trophies. Always the joker, Mr Evans was good for a tease whenever I saw him. My personal condolences and love from all the Butterfield's to you all.

My condolences to Deans family on thier loss.
I first met Dean when I was assignned to his home room roughly around 1957 at the Shaw Junior High School. For some reason I still remember the pink and gray 1957 chevy he drove and the time he took a group of us deep sea fishing and most of us got sea sick with the exception of Jim Greenwood Would just rolled up and down the deck in his wheel chair.Dean was a fabulous coach but he didn't just reserve his attention to his teams.He treated everyone with the same caring attitude and easy going manner. He was a fabulous History teacher and I always looked forward to his class. The last time I spoke to him was a few years back at the Gorham House where I was visiting my mother and he was visiting his wife. Just wish we had had more time to talk. He will be missed

My condolences to Mr . Evans family . Coach Evans was a positive influence on many students. Dean Evans was my high school cross country coach and he always had a positive and encouraging word for each of us . His work ethic , positive outlook and never give-up approach went beyond athletics and served as valuable tools later in life . I am sorry that I have missed the opportunity to thank him ,in person , for his many kind and encouraging words .

I always appreciated Dean's approach as well as his support. I got to experience Dean as both a player and then a baseball coach at GHS. He had a unique sense of humor and he was always available and accountable.

My condolences to Kyle and the rest of the Evans family. Dean was a golfing buddy at both Gorham CC and in Myrtle Beach for over 30 years. He was the ultimate commissioner who always treated everyone fairly no matter their ability. RIP my friend.

Dean was a fine man. I knew him on the golf course in Myrtle Beach where he led the group for a number of years. A task that is not always easy to do with a light and friendly manner, which he always did. My condolences to his family members.
