Edwin E. Thayer SOUTH PARIS -- Edwin E. Thayer, of Oxford, died May 30, 2009, at the Maine Veterans Home after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born in Norway Sept. 3, 1932, the son of Dorothea and Arthur Thayer. Raised on the farm in Oxford, Ed's work ethic began at a young age delivering milk before walking for miles up hill both ways to school. After completing his four years in the Navy, he went to work for Robinson Manufacturing Company for a short while. He also worked for the State of Maine building the Maine Turnpike. His love of trucks began when he went into business with his cousin at H&B Trucking in Saco. This led him to Wiscasset where they bought Lincoln Motor Express. From there trucks led him through many a company, Bisson, Nelson Freightways, Coke-a Cola in New Hampshire, and Fox & Ginn. Finally in 1978 he bought two trucks and began Ed Thayer Inc. Settling back in Oxford in 1983, retiring, or pretending to retire, in 1994 with a fleet of 35 trucks. Janice & Family,

I am so grieved to hear of Ed's passing and wish that I had been able to see him one last time. I have always had such fond memories of him and his sense of humor. I was just telling someone the other day about the party boat adventure that Peggy mentioned, that's a moment I will keep in my memory forever. I miss you all and will talk with you on Tuesday. Stay strong. Love Sarah

Dear Janice,
My visits/contact with Ed were brief but always memorable. I remember trying to chat with him in Patti and Steve's driveway while we were all trying to cope with Laura's health issues. In order to talk I had to keep up the pace with him as he walked back and forth, back and forth. I could see the helplessness he was carrying during this time. And then there was the "Don't look ED!" event on the party boat but...it was to late...Ed already looked. That was priceless and you know what I am talking about! I will treasurer these times with him and will remember him as kind and humorous. He will be missed by so many. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Time heals and good memories flood the heart and mind. xoxo-Peg
