Ernest A. Morton, 80
WESTBROOK -- Ernest A. Morton, 80, of Westbrook passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2010 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a long illness. Born in Gorham on Nov. 15, 1929, he was a son of George P. and Katherine A. Vaughan Morton and was a graduate of Gorham High School. After high school, he joined the US Marine Corps and while home on leave he met and married Irene Miller. Mr. Morton worked as a mechanic at Maine Mack for many years and enjoyed driving for Ryder Truck in retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a 50 year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and ran the Wednesday night Bingo in Westbrook for many years. As a talented man who could do just about anything with his hands, many family members have treasures he made for them including caned chairs, snowshoes and lead soldiers.
Surviving him are his wife of 59 years, Irene C. Miller Morton of Westbrook; sons, Peter and his wife, Karen of Scarborough and Christopher and his wife, Eileen of Westbrook, daughter, Irene (Morton) Crosby and her husband, Bob of South Portland; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Morton's family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice of Southern Maine for their compassionate care during Ernest's final days. Visiting hours will be held Monday, Sept. 27, 2010 from 4-6 p.m. at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010 at the chapel. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook.
