Evelyn Finkelman Obituary

Evelyn Hugo Finkelman, 93
PORTLAND -- Evelyn Hugo Finkelman, of Dania Beach, Fla. and Portland, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at the Village Crossings in Cape Elizabeth. She was 93 years young.
Evelyn was born in Portland on March 27, 1919, one of two daughters and four sons of Morris and Esther (Schiebe) Hugo.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Sidney; her parents; her beloved sister, Beverly, and beloved brothers, George, Harmon and Frank Hugo. Evelyn is survived by a loving family that includes her son Lawrence and his wife Anita; three special grandchildren, Lisa Finkelman and her husband Alex Wu, Daryl Finkelman, and Derek Finkelman and his wife Karen; four adoring great-grandchildren, Dante Wu and Connor, Caleb, and Camden Finkelman; a beloved brother, Harold Hugo and his loving wife Eva; and a beloved sister-in-law, Winniefred Hugo. In addition, she is survived by many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
Evelyn graduated from Portland High School in 1936. She started working in the family business, Portland Copper and Tank Works, in the 1930s. She also held a number of jobs that included a sales position with Factory Outlet on Middle Street.
Upon retiring, Evelyn and her husband moved to Florida and lived in Hallandale Beach before moving to Dania Beach in 1982. She assisted in starting the Civilian Observation Patrol System (COPS) program in Dania Beach. That program was a great success in helping to reduce crime in her community.
Wherever she lived, she loved to play Mahjong and made many life long friendships from that association. She was quite athletic and walked at least two miles a day before 8 a.m. She loved to exercise in the swimming pool with her friends for one hour a day when in Florida.
Evelyn also enjoyed traveling. She and Sidney journeyed to the island of Okinawa shortly

after their first grandchild, Lisa, was born in a U.S. Army hospital there. They had an enchanted journey, visiting many Asian countries, as well as Okinawa.
One of the things Evelyn enjoyed most in life was going places, and each day would go with friends and family to as many places as she could, enjoying the interactions with others along the way.
The first priority in her life was her family. She was the primary caretaker of her mother when she came down with cancer. After her mother's passing, Evelyn took care of her father until he passed away five years later. She was tireless in taking care of her parents as well as her own family.
Evelyn was also always available if anyone in the family needed a helping hand. More recently she loved to watch and hear about her great-grandchildren participating in various activities.
Evelyn was a member and participant of many Jewish organizations, including Temple Beth El, Shaarey Tphiloh, Jewish Community Center, and B'nai Brith.
Evelyn moved to the Village Crossings assisted living facility in Cape Elizabeth two years ago. She thoroughly enjoyed living there. The employees showed great empathy and treated her with tremendous support, dignity, and respect. Beginning in January, Evelyn received vital assistance from Beacon Hospice personnel who were also most generous, gentle, and kind with their assistance in her care.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 14, at 12 p.m., at the Levey Chapel, 471 Deering Ave., in Portland. The service will be officiated by Rabbi Akiva Herzfeld. Interment will follow at the Mt. Sinai Cemetery, Hicks Street, Portland. Arrangements by The Jewish Funeral Home, Portland.

I had the great honor of getting to know Evelyn during her time at the Cedars. She was always so full of spunk, and zest for life. Her love of travel and wanting to stay busy allowed me to get to know her and I will always be grateful. She was a wonderful woman, and her memory will live on. My heart goes out to her family and friends.
