Fred Webster Obituary

Fred B. Webster, 84
YARMOUTH - Fred B. Webster died on April 14, 2015, with his beloved wife Colleen and dog, Charlie by his side.
Fred was born on July 30, 1930, in Portland, the son of Fred B. Webster Sr. and Doris Preston Webster. He attended Deering High School and graduated from Hebron Academy. He attended Williams College and spent two years at UNH Hotel School in preparation to manage Homewood Inn - a family run business.
His National Guard unit was activated in 1948 and sent to Tripoli, Libya during the Korean Conflict. There, he served in the United States Air Force. Upon returning, Fred worked for the John C Paige Company and Dow & Pinkham Insurance until 1974. He was also co-owner of Webster and Goddard insurance from 1974 until 1990.
Fred married Colleen McKinley Slayton in 1967. Together they began the adventure of co-managing Homewood Inn. Fred's parents, Fred Sr. and Doris, started Homewood Inn in the 1940s. Every summer, people came from all over the world to admire the beauty of picturesque Maine and enjoy the wonderful hospitality of three generations of the Webster family. During the winters, Fred and Colleen pursued one of their passions and traveled the globe.
After Homewood Inn closed, Fred volunteered at Score and appraised antiques for Cyr Auction Company. His love of Casco Bay led him to make many voyages with family and friends on his boat, The Capt. Drinkwater. His retirement also allowed him to spend time with his grandchildren whom he took camping and fishing. His civic duties included serving on the Yarmouth Zoning Board, Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce, and other town committees.
Fred was predeceased by his parents; his son Jeff; and his sister Patricia. He is survived by his wife Colleen; daughter Sally Webster, daughter Julie Frank and her husband Andy, Shirley and Dick Leeman, daughter in-law Lisa Webster; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three nieces and a nephew.
Fred was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word; he was kind and courteous to all. His humor and wit shone through when discussing issues of the day. Fred was loved by many and will be missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 11 a.m. at Homewood Village in Yarmouth. We hope to see you on Saturday, April 25, 2015, to help us celebrate Fred's life. Care for Fred and his family has been entrusted to the Lindquist Funeral Home of Yarmouth.

The family requests no flowers be sent. Instead, please send donations to the Lifestages VNA Hospice who supported Fred over the last two years. Checks may be sent to the

My thoughts are with the family as you say goodbye and reflect on such a gentle and kind man. I have many fond memories of growing up in Yarmouth and spending time with my childhood friend Sally. Often we played and worked at Homewood Inn where "Mr. Webster" was always kind and interested in our endeavors. In recent years he would always go out of his way to say hello to my mother and I. Yarmouth will miss such a dignified human being.

Thanks to Fred I found a job at the Maine Bonding & Casualty Co. where I then spent 33 years of my working life. Fred always had a warm, friendly smile... one of those people in your life you always remember with affection. We were also squadron mates in Tripoli way, way back. My condolences to the family.

I just saw that Fred passed away. Always enjoyed seeing him at Hannaford's in Yarmouth. He was such a pleasure to talk to and a real gentleman. May he rest in peace.

Wish I could hop on a plane to be with you all this weekend. I'll miss my uncle and all the parts of Homewood Inn that are slipping away except in our fond memories.
I'm sending lots of love to all of my Fred Webster family.
