Gerald Sherry Obituary

Gerald B. Sherry, 83
CAPE ELIZABETH - Gerald B. Sherry, 83, of Cape Elizabeth, and formerly of West Hartford, Conn., passed away on July 28, 2018, from cancer. Jerry was born in Hartford, Conn. in 1935 to Samuel and Rose Sherry.
Jerry's knowledge and patience positively affected thousands of young people. Through two decades he taught not only high school plumbing at Prince Technical School in Hartford and code classes for license applicants, but also basic literacy for the many students who reached his classrooms without that skill. Jerry wrote several textbooks including volumes on building codes and plumbing which were used nationally. He held a patent for a commericial packaging and sealing machine.
His "let's get it done" ethic also applied to his time volunteering at synagogues and Jewish burial societies throughout his life, as a member of the Cape Elizabeth Lions Club, and as a Trustee of the Riverside Memorial Cemetary in Cape Elizabeth. An enthusiast for the arts, Jerry also volunteered at symphony, theaters and museums. He passed his enthusiams for luthier on to his daughter and enjoyed his 'retirement job' as gate-keeper at Two Lights State Park.
Jerry was predeceased by his brother Ernest Sherry and sister Sylvia Federman. His warm, goofy sense of humor will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 58 years, Marilyn Sherry; daughter Trudy Egan and son-in-law Tom Egan of Los Angeles, Calif., son Sam Sherry and daughter-in-law Kathy Moreschi-Sherry of Cape Elizabeth; grandchildren Dylan and Samika Sherry; and his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jerry was deeply grateful to the staff of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston for their gift of the last three years of his life, and to the staff of Hospice of Southern Maine for exceptionally caring treatment during his final days.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 31, at 1 p.m. at the Congregation Etz Chaim, 267 Congress St. in Portland. Reception and mourning will be held at Congregation Etz Chaim after interment at Mt Carmel Cemetery, Hicks Street in Portland. Arrangements made by Portland Jewish Funeral Home.
