Henry Farrington Obituary

Henry "Hank" Farrington Sr., 63
SOUTH PORTLAND - Henry "Hank" Farrington Sr., 63, passed away on Dec. 1, 2015, after a long, hard, and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He fought it up until his very last breath. He was born a St. Patrick's Day baby in 1952 in Rumford, the son of Madeline and Charles Farrington.
Henry was one of the most humble, honest, and hardworking men you would ever meet. If anyone needed his help, he'd break his back just to make it happen. Oftentimes, living paycheck-to-paycheck, he would still turn over a wallet full of cash if he came across it. It's just the way he was. When his kids were growing up, he would patch the same holes over and over again in his jeans, just so that he could give new clothes to the kids. He was a Chevy man who liked to joke around, but he could also be a drill sergeant when it came to priorities. He hated to be late for anything. He loved camping and fishing (coffee and cigarettes, too) and spent his summers on Lower Range Pond in Poland Spring. It wasn't uncommon to get slapped in the forehead by him and told, "You should have had a V8!"
He was involved with the Teamsters Union through his work at Monson/Shurtleff Co. where he worked for 28 years, and the guys there became a second family to him. He is survived by his wife Janet of 30 years, and his five children: Henry Jr. and his wife Stacey, Tammy, Shawn and his spouse Sandy, Kelly, and Amanda. He had 14 grandchildren, 9.5 (one on the way!) great-grandchildren, a sister Alice, brothers Eugene and Lewis, brothers-in-law Russ and Danny, and sister-in-law Mary; and many grandpets, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, his in-laws Bucky and Jean Elwell, his brother Harry, brothers-in-law Peter Vance and Bucky Jr. Elwell, and sister-in-law Cheryl Bouchard.
We would like to thank Dr. Dugan, Arlene O'Rourke, and the staff at New England Cancer Specialists for their care, love, support, and expertise.
Visiting hours will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, at Stroudwater Baptist Church, 1729 Congress St., Portland. The funeral service will be at the church at 10:30 a.m., immediately followed by a gathering downstairs. He will be laid to rest after the gathering at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland, and all are welcome. To offer condolences and share memories with the family please go to

Even though John and I were miles away you always seemed to always send a christmas or birthday card; or even invite us camping or to your house. You always had such a big heart and made us laugh. I will always remember the good times we had and never forget the person that showed me my Farrington side. You will be dearly missed. Xoxo- Ashley
