John Ignatius Keating Sr., 90

CONWAY, S.C. - John Ignatius Keating Sr., 90, formerly of South Portland, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Embrace Hospice House of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Mr. Keating was born in Portland, Maine, the son of the late Francis L. and Margaret Curran Keating. He was a graduate of Portland High School, in Portland, and loved different languages, and spoke fluent Spanish and French.

Mr. Keating was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, receiving many commendations for his service. He loved history, especially the Civil War. He was a devout Catholic and a communicant at Holy Cross Church.

A devoted family man, he was quick to find the humor and irony in daily life, and always had a smile and twinkle in his eye. He loved watching football and baseball, and of course, often sported a Boston Red Sox hat.

He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Christina M. Ashley; his sister, Mary T. Mills; and brothers, Richard, Leonard and Edward Keating.

Surviving are his children, Ann K. Cloutier of South Portland, Patrice Keating of Conway, S.C., Mary C. Damon of Westbrook, Christina E. Keating of Windham, John I. Keating of Erie, Pa., Mark A. Keating of Virginia Beach, Va., Arne Bonay of Waynesboro, Va., Matthew J. Keating of Bradenton, Fla., and Luke V. Keating of Cataula, Ga.; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 65 Sherman St., Portland, at 10 a.m. on June 20, 2018, followed by internment at the new Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
