John Marquis Obituary

John B. Marquis Jr, 87
BRUNSWICK -- John B. Marquis, Jr, 87, died peacefully after battling Alzheimer's Friday, June 7, 2013 at Winship Green Nursing Center.
He was born in Brunswick, March 13, 1926, the son of John B. and Exilia Bouchard Marquis and attended St. John's School.
He married Helen A. Pelletier in Brunswick on June 24, 1950. Helen died June 9, 2011.
John served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After being wounded in Germany and following his release from the hospital in Paris, he was transferred to the military police. He was employed for several years as a truck driver with Thibeault's Express prior to becoming a Brunswick Police Officer in the early 1960's. Following his retirement, he became a private detective and in the 1980's, he worked as a Deputy with Cumberland County Sheriff's Dept., was a town constable until retiring in 1995 and he also worked in the athletic department at Bowdoin College.
John & Helen enjoyed wintering in Florida. He was avid golfer and occasionally worked as a ranger and head gangbuster at Brunswick Golf Club.
He was an active member of the Brunswick Lodge of Elks, Sekenger Council, Knights of Columbus and member of the VFW.
John was a well-known and highly respected member of both Brunswick's business and social society. He was known as a hard worker and devoted family man. He had many friends throughout the area that loved him.
He is survived by two sons, Capt. John B. Marquis, III of Tampa, Fla., Neil J. Marquis of Brunswick and his companion, Kim Carpentier, a daughter, Jane L. Fournier of Brunswick; two brothers, Alfred Marquis of Brunswick and Donald Marquis of Arlington, Mass., a sister Marcelle Corthell of Portland; five grandchildren, John B. Marquis IV and his wife, Karina, James Taylor, Trinity Lewis, Hilary Warren and husband Phillip and Hannah Marquis; three great-grandchildren, Marley Mae, Amaiya and Phillip Warren.
Family and friends may visit 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick. A funeral service with police and military honors will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Wednesday. A Tribute of his life may be viewed and condolence to the family expressed at: www.brackettfuneralhome.com.
