Service Announcement
A Memorial Service, for the late former State Senator, Joseph C. Brannigan, 83, who died on Jan. 17, 2015, in Portland, will be held at
11 a.m. on Saturday,
Feb. 7, 2015, in the
Ludcke Auditorium, UNE, 716 Stevens Ave., Portland.
On line Condolences may be sent to [email protected]. Arrangements are under the guidance of the OLD ORCHARD BEACH FUNERAL HOME, 36 Portland Avenue, Old Orchard Beach.

Joe and I grew up on Elm Street in Topsham. We were born a month apart. I have many wonderful memories of the times we spent together in our youth. We both joined the Navy in 1951. In 1955, Joe was an usher at my wedding to Ruth Fryer in Hartford, CT. Our most recent meeting was when both of us served in the Maine House of Representatives in the late nineties and early 2000's. My condolences to Joe's family and his siblings and their families. Joe's compassion and aid to those less fortunate will be missed by many.

Clair,, Please accept my sympathy in the passing of Joe. I have only pleasant memories of you & Joe, especially with Indian pudding, the first time I came to your house. You both have gone through a lot in your married life, all of which shows the love and devotion to the people of Maine.

We have always admired Joe's work both as a legislator as well as his leadership with

Joe was clearly one of a kind! I worked with Joe at Shalom House for 24 years and saw directly the impact that he had on thousands of lives, not only those that are living with serious mental illness but many others who have experienced stigma and discrimination. He did this in such an unassuming but powerful and effective way in all the roles he assumed in Portland and the state of Maine. Those who worked with Joe also experienced first hand his kindness and compassion when we were dealing with challenges in our own lives. I consider myself so fortunate to have known Joe and been part of the work he did here at Shalom House. Joe is gone from us but leaves a huge legacy and will never be forgotten. I send my most heartfelt condolences to Claire, Luke and his entire family.

My sincere sympathies go out to the Brannigan family. I was one of those fortunate enough to work for and with Joe at Shalom House for a number of years. With Joe, it wasn't like having a boss, it was having a very good and supportive friend. What he was able to do to help so many during his lifetime cant be duplicated. There will never be another, Joe. He was such a 'good' man in every sense of the word. His devotion to family, friends and anyone he could help to make their lives better, is legendary. You will be very missed, Joe! RIP
