Joseph DiMauro Obituary

Joseph R. DiMauro Sr., 83 Golfer, musician, loving dad. PORTLAND -- Our dad, Joseph R. DiMauro Sr., passed away at the age of 83, on Oct. 2, 2009, in the home of his son Joey and wife Ursula. After having lived with cancer, he died peacefully, surrounded by his children Janice, Joey, Joanne and Jon and daughter-in-law Ursula. Dad was an excellent golfer and guitar player and continued to pursue both with a passion all his life. He played in numerous amateur golf tournaments and had many achievements, including a hole-in-one. He sang and performed hundreds of songs in clubs and for family and friends. He was born and grew up in South Portland, and was captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams in high school. He lived many years there with his former wife Gloria, where they raised their four children. He served in the army during WWII and played on the Army baseball team while in Japan. After attending Northwestern University, he went to work at Maine Central Railroad and continued his career there, retiring as Chief Commercial Agent. Since retirement, he spent winters in Florida and summers in Maine. Dad was a gentle, kind man, always living and enjoying his life to the fullest. His warm optimistic spirit touched all those who met him and it will continue to live on in all of us. He will be sadly missed by his children; grandchildren, Ryan, Gregg and Nicki; and great-granddaughter Bella. A memorial celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, from 1-3 p.m. Memories, thoughts and prayers will be shared at 1:30 p.m. A reception will immediately follow at the home of Janice DiMauro, 374 Broadway, South Portland. Dear DiMauro family,

Please accept our deepest sympathies for the passing of your father, brother and our uncle. I always enjoyed my time with Uncle Joe playing golf and chatting about the family history. Just his past year at the family reunion he and I spend a great deal of time talking about my recent trip to his dad's home village in Terracina Italy. He joking asked me is there really a placed called Terracina? I showed him a photo of his mom and dad's home and we got to talk about the family one more time as we enjoyed some fine Italian food. He will be missed.
Love,
Dana and Eileen Green

I am so sorry to hear of the man I always just thought of as "Mr. DiMauro" as one of the Keswick Road neighborhood kids. I probably spent as much time at the DiMauro house as I did my own.

My prayers are for Jan, Joanne, Joey and Jon and all of you as you continue your goodbyes to your Dad. Bless you all.
