Kenneth Fernald Obituary

Kenneth Fernald, 59 PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- Kenneth Fernald, 59, of Portsmouth, N.H., died of natural causes at his home on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008. Born in Eliot on March 11, 1949, he was the youngest son of Carl S. and Matilda E. (Hobbs) Fernald. Ken attended local schools and was a member of the first graduating class of Marshwood High School in 1967. In his early years of ministry, Ken taught reading at a local Christian school and was the host of a television and radio show called 'Born Again New England' along with the radio program 'The Lord is On Your Side.' As relayed a number of years ago during an interview, Ken said he loved what he was doing, but God had other things in store for him. Ken looked back at his radio ministry and said, 'I learned not to put a question mark where God had put a period.' Following a self-described tumultuous teenage period, Ken left his past behind and gave his life to the Lord. He became known to many in New England as the Burl Ives of Christian music and more recently as 'New England's Own Gospel Singer.' Ken began his music ministry in earnest in 1980. In 1986, music became his full-time ministry. Ken's personal appearances throughout New England offered hope, comfort, and encouragement to all who were blessed to hear him. A concert with Ken offered all who attended an opportunity to appreciate his music ministry and New England humor at the same time. Ken's recordings express the praises of a humble man whose life was completely transformed and blessed by the grace of God through the Lord Jesus Christ. Having freely received from the Lord, Ken freely gave of his time, talents, and resources in order to share the love of Christ with others. Ken is survived by his two brothers and their spouses, George and Sheila of Cornelius, N.C., Richard and Donna of Huntersville, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Fernald of Eliot; and several nieces and nephews. Ken is also survived by his close friends John and Susan Crothers and family of Eliot, Donna Frautten of Bangor; and by many other friends throughout New England. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Ronald Fernald. A funeral will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at 10 a.m., at the Bethel Assembly of God Church on Market Street in Portsmouth, N.H. Visiting hours will be held at the church from 6-9 Friday evening, Oct. 17. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ken's memory to the 'Ken Fernald Memorial Scholarship Fund' to help a deserving student with formal training for Christian Ministry. Ken, it has been over a year since your departure to Heaven and how we miss your lovely voice and moving testimony. Your ministry still continues through your tapes and cds. As I travel preaching the Gospel I play your music and am blessed so much. Your memory will stay with us for years to come. It was great knowing you and traveling with you so many years in evangelistic crusades and deeper life conferences. We shall all be together one day. Your friend Dr. Reg Dunlap

My Friend,
It seeems like yesterday when I first met you.I was learning the wiring trade and you were working at the church.I had no idea when I saw you pushing that broom, that you would change my life forever. You lived with your beautiful mother on south street in Portsmouth. I still smile at the time you had me over there to listen to the couple of songs that you had recorded on the $29.00 Radio Shack tape recorder that your mom had bought for you. Remember when I asked you how long you had been singing? Two years was your reply.I still Can't believe you were only playing around with the singing at the time. Remember Ken,I asked you if you ever thought of doing the music for a living? Your answer was "I would love to if the Lord opened that door".Wow little did I know , that statement alone, was the begining and cornerstone of our friendship. Hey Ken remember those Christmas when each year you would come over to our house and the kids would think you were Santa Claus!Yes we were much younger then ha.ha. Oh how great our Lord is ,He did open that door and Provided you with a proffessional sound equipment and a wonderful group of friends that labored endlessly to listen to you and help you to form the first"Ken Fernald" music ministry,Later to be called" Ken Fernald and Friends". Where has the time gone my friend? Heck I couldn't even sneak off to Florida with my wife Caroline without running into you comming out of the Icecream shop on main street with a EXTRA LARGE cholcolate cone melting down your hand.I have a witness to that don't I Darren!! Well Ken, my friend and brother,it has been forty years, and I know you are tired and must sleep now.But before I say goodnight,I want to say thank you for teaching me of Gods Love, and opening that door into so many other peoples lifes. Say goodnight to God for me,and give my father and your mother a hug for me. I will see you soon,Love your brother Bob.

I remember about 10 years ago going on a business trip to Ohio. Bad weather delayed the flight considerably. I got into my rented car at about 10:00pm, and had about a 90 minute drive to my hotel. Not knowing where you are, and having only a faint clue where you're going at that hour of night was to say the least, unnerving. In my briefcase I had 1 of Ken Fernalds cassettes, that I had bought when he performed at Greenfield Covenant Church. I popped it into the cassette player, and to this day, I remember the instant calming effect his wonderful voice had on me.

I am truly saddened at his passing, but I rejoice that he is with our Lord, and will see him again.

God bless you, Ken

I was very saddened to hear of Ken's passing. Those of us who have witnessed his wonderful voice praising our Lord and also his wonderful sense of humor were very blessed. I am sure he is singing God's praises at this very moment and also enjoying spending time with his mother again. Rest in peace Ken.

Our prayers are with Ken's family as you grieve the loss of a good man. But we do not grieve "as the rest of men who have no hope..." 1 Thess. 4. I have fond memories of Ken as he brought the Word of God to us through song at many Men's Retreats at Monadnock Bible Conference in Jaffrey, NH. My favorite song was "Excuses." Galatians 6:9, " Do not grow weary in well doing..." Ken, your work here is done. Bless you for blessing so many here on this side.

It is hard to add to all the wonderful things that have been said already - all of which are true. His love for the Lord and for others shone through, and we were blessed to know him and privileged to have him consider us his friends. If the Lord allows those who have gone on ahead of us a glimpse of what's taking place down here, he knows that we love and miss him and look forward to that day when we will meet again. We will surely "look for [you]," Ken, and it won't take a million years before we get around to it, either!!

Christian sympathies to Ken's family. White Rock Church in Gorham Me, held a harvest supper every fall (Oct. 17th this year) and Ken was to be the special guest at the supper and later their special music. He will be greatly missed by many for his love for others, his great jokes, his gentle music and his everyday, down to earth personality.

Ken did a few concerts in North Sutton..this is where I first met this wonderful man and came to love his music. Ken is a genuine Christian with an amazing undying love for the LORD. I shall remember him always whenever I sing a song Ken had recorded or listen to one of his CD's or tapes in my collection. I know he is singing praise to the LORD sitting at the feet of JESUS! We will miss you, your voice shall live on...until we meet you again in heaven one day........

We were shocked and in tears when the telephone call came telling us of Ken's passing. Our hearts and our prayers go out to family and friends mourning his loss. Ken was a blessing to so many. His love for the Lord was so evident when he sang. The music he sang brought comfort, hope and encouragement. He also had such a wonderful sense of humor. Who could ever forget the Ken Fernald fan and Ken's many humorous stories. This humble man knew how to make people laugh and he was always ready to share the love of Jesus with those he came in contact with.

Kathy sang in two of the Ken & Friend's concerts at the Opera House in Franklin, NH and also at the picnic Ken had for many years in August. Ken not only loved to sing but he encouraged others to use their voice to praise God, also.

Ken has now joined the Heavenly choir and he is being "Serenated by Angels." It is such a comfort knowing where he is and that we will see him there someday.

With Our Heartfelt Sympathy to family and friends,

Please extend our condolences to all of Ken's family.
We share in your loss, but are also thankful for the blessing from God for Ken's Music Ministry, which has blessed so many for so many years. Ken's testimony and songs, we know, brought so many to Jesus salvation.
Ken has opened our Ladies Fidelis Missionary year, for so many years, the first Wednesday of October and although we feel the loss now, next October it will really hit us hard.
We loved Ken always and he'll always be in our hearts.

This Memorial Fund is something we know Ken would appreciate. He always included the younger people in his attention at his concerts.
Our Bristol Baptist Church Family, Diaconate, and Ladies Fidelis Missionary thank God for Ken and all of you who helped in Ken's full time Ministry in Song.
Sincerely

Dear, dear friend, how we miss you.
You are loved to the ends of the earth. The tears that we shed are because we miss you so, but we smile through those tears, knowing that your most fervrent prayer has been answered...to meet the Father, face to face.
Knowing you for over 25 years has been pure joy. You have been with us through losing friends and family, through the serious illnesses in our house, you have been the joy in my heart with the funny emails you sent, the jokes you wrote, and the words we shared. You blessed us beyond words with your music and it will be forever in our hearts, minds and souls.
As our friends say, the Heavenly Choir has been increased with a sweet, sweet voice.
You are where you wanted to be and may God bless you with all that you have patiently waited for, especially the loving arms of His Son.
Please watch over us with the Father.
Dear, dear friend, how we miss you.

It seems like only yesterday and yet it was 20 years ago when Ken broadcast on Sunday mornings on the old WHEB in Portsmouth. My mother Eleanor and our friend Linda Roman and I joined him there for several years of christian programming. What a joy that was. Ken's great spirit and friendly smile were as much a blessing as his wonderful voice. See you again someday my friend!

What a blessing it was to have heard Ken sing. His voice was God's beautiful gift, and thankfully a gift Ken shared with many. Now, he's singing with the angels, all pain and sorrow a thing of the past. Luckily we who remain can still hear that beautiful voice via his wonderful recordings.
Our deepest sympathy to his loved ones.

We mourn the loss of this sincere and godly man. Ken and his wonderful music ministry will be deeply missed. He has been a long-term friend of the ministry of Operation Blessing, even holding a benefit concert to raise funds for the facility we currently operate out of. He touched so many lives with his voice, his smile and his humor. We do rejoice that he is now enjoying his eternal reward with Jesus (his best friend) and we are left with very warm memories.

Dear Fernald family,

I was very saddened to hear about your brother’s passing last night. He was a good friend and faithful servant of the Lord. Although, losing Ken is a sad occasion, we can rejoice in the fact that he is now singing with his mother and brother who have gone before. Ken has left an extraordinary legacy on gospel music and will always hold a place in our hearts as “New England’s Own Gospel Singer.”
As great as this is, however, he left a far greater legacy. Ken was a man of faith who sought to serve as a witness for Christ in his singing and life. Ken realized that it isn’t what you can do that makes you who you are. It’s how well you do it onto the Lord. Ken lead by example and was always humbly confident when it came to His faith.
Wherever Ken went he spread the love of Jesus Christ through song and personal testimony. As a young man unsure of his faith, Ken made me realize that faith isn’t just something you share in church on Sunday. It’s meant to be shared everywhere.

Many other Churches and fellowships can thank the Lord for Ken’s kindly presentation of this truth. Ken is now enjoying his heavenly reward, and someday we will join him in that great heavenly choir where there are no trials and temptations. If there if anything your family needs at this time simply ask me, and I will be glad to be of assistance.
Rest in peace, Ken! You will always be “New England’s Own Gospel Singer”, and we will remember your legacy of faithfulness and compassion.
Sincerely,
Luke Allen Russell

It is difficult to sum up the influence Ken Fernald had on so many people. We had a personal friendship for over 30 years. We traveled together all over New England in crusades and conferences. Ken was a model of what a Christian is all about. He practiced the presence of God.
Ken was a man drenched with Christ. And over 27 years God worked miracles through his life. He was a man of the people -all the people, all denominations, all classes, all colors. As Christ was his Savior and Sovereign, so Christ was his daily song. And he sung that song for years. And he continues to sing it - in some higher, finer key.
While he now belongs to the ages, his holy influence lives on. I shall miss you dear friend. But we shall meet in the morning. Reg Dunlap,

I first met Ken - one of the greatest friends I have ever known while I was just 12 years-old. Looking back over 30 years I can say that I have been blessed more times over by this dear brother than my words can ever express. When I first met Ken he was just stepping out into ministry – part-time and then later full-time. As a young boy I was so moved and inspired by him that I boldly told him that I wanted to travel and sing with him! With my parents blessing, we traveled to countless nursing homes, prisons, churches, and conferences throughout New England. It was such a privilege to serve along side him. I remember one weekend Ken was scheduled to visit a church he had never been to before. Really, it was a small out of the way place in the country. The service was supposed to start that Sunday at 6 p.m. We arrived well in advance to set-up and prepare for the evening, but no one showed up to let us in…? Just moments before the service was supposed to begin no more than 4 people appeared. I remember being somewhat perplexed and Ken looking at me saying…’No matter whether there are 4 or 400 people I am still going to minister these people.’ What I witnessed over so many years was a man who was totally committed to his calling. Oh how I so miss those many hours in the car with him alone…those candid conversations about our faith, about the struggles in life, and even what was waiting for us in Glory Land. While I heard Ken say many times over was that he was just a man - no different than the rest of us really. He shared the same heart aches and troubles, but he had a fountain to draw his strength from. Dear Ken, you have left a deep life changing impression upon this man. Your grace, humility, friendship, and laughter will be missed until we see one another in eternity. Your brother and friend in Christ, Darren Carlton

The heavenly choir is much richer now that Ken has joined it, but he will be greatly missed here on earth. Since attending a Ken Fernald and Friends concert in Franklin, NH several years ago, my wife and I have tried to attend as many of his concerts that we could when he was in the area. We have a 9 year old that visits us often that was always excited to go to his concerts as well. We will miss seeing him, but think of him often as we listen to his tapes and CDs.

To Ken's friends and church family:

I was present for many of Ken's gospel concerts at Liberty Baptist Church in Nottingham, NH during the 1980's and I enjoyed every minute of each of his appearances. I bought many of his tapes and memorized several of his songs. Ken was at an outdoor baptism I attended at the home of Linda Shatney in 1985 when we had a pig roast. He was just a great guy who really loved his Lord. I guess the words to one of his songs truly says it all: "I just want to be remembered as a guy who sang his songs for Jesus Christ"

You have it made now Ken;
I'm so glad to have known you,

WE REMEMBER THE FUN TIMES WITH KEN AND THE LOVE HE HAD FOR PEOPLE. HE WAS SHY WHEN HE FIRST STARTED HIS MINISTRY BUT AFTER SOME TIME BEGAN TO SING MORE AND MINISTER TO ALOT OF FOLKS. HE WOULD MAKE PEOPLE LAUGH AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES. HE WAS A GIANT FOR THE LORD IN MORE WAYS THAN SINGING. WE TRAVELED AND PRAYED WITH HIM FOR OTHERS, HE BLESSED OURS LIVES AS A GOOD FRIEND AND CHRISTIAN BROTHER. HE HAS GONE ON TO A PLACE HE USE TO WONDER ABOUT. ALWAYS THINK OF HIM WITH A SMILE AND A SONG IN YOUR HEART, IT IS WHAT HE WOULD WANT PEOPLE TO DO.

Ken, we've been friends since childhood. I have many fond memories of you (the little guy) tagging along with us bigger kids. Then I have memories of later years and how you so lovingly cared for your mom. She was so proud of your accomplishments. I will really miss your concerts at St. Catherine's Church at Christmastime and all the stories you would tell about our childhood to the ladies. George and Richie you have my very deepest sympathy.

Ken, What can I say, but to thank you for your ministries through music. The music that you shared, has touched a lot of people's lives, including mine. You'll be missed my friend, but it's satisfying to know that you're finally home. Sincerely, Adam Johnson (Former member of First Baptist Church of Kittery Point, ME)

You sang "Holy Ground" on the day we broke ground to build a wonderful church. You gave our son a chance to draw close to the Lord by traveling with you. You shared an intimate small group with us for a while. The Lord used you to bless so many with your velvety voice...he will continue to do so even though you are basking in his presence. Your work on earth will continue on. Thank you. We love you.

Ken has meant so much to all of us here at Bristol Baptist for many many years.

Our Ladies group loved Ken so much they have asked him to perform here every fall for the last 15 - 17 years.

Ken will be missed, but we look forward to seeing him again when our turn comes to go to our Heavenly Father.
