Leo Daley Obituary

Leo Hayden Daley, 81
KENNEBUNKPORT - Leo Hayden Daley, 81, of Kennebunkport, died peacefully on March 6, 2018, at Southern Maine Health Care. His family gathered to be with him. Leo was born on April 10, 1936, the first child of Leo Francis Daley and Dorothy Bailey Daley. He grew up in Andover, graduated from Phillips Academy Andover and entered Harvard in 1953 with the class of '57. At both schools he was a valuable member of the football squad. In 1955 he took a time-out to serve in the United States Marine Corp. Following his discharge from active duty he completed his Harvard education with a degree in Economics.
On May 21, 1960, Leo married Cynthia Stuart Carmichael. They first met in a Harvard class and again later, when both were working for IBM. The marriage was a happy 57 years. They lived for 25 years in Winchester, MA before being drawn to life in Maine. They had summered for many years at Drakes Island where Leo served a jovial term as the DIIA president. Leo lived in Maine for 24 years.
Leo had a long career as an Investment Banker for several major firms in Boston, and joined another in Portland. He remained in the business until he retired at age 79.
Leo served on the Boards of Mass. Eye and Ear, Milton Bradley and The Second Club of Boston.
When Leo was not working, he most enjoyed spending time with his beloved family and friends, laughter and fun, staying current on all sporting and business news, keeping on top of investment strategies and being near the ocean. He was a member of the Kennebunk River Club and a devoted member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church.
Leo is predeceased by his dear sister, Agnes Daley Rothrock. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia; son, Leo Jr. (""Toby"") and wife Alison of Manchester-by-the Sea, Mass.; ""Gummer's"" grandchildren, Leo Alexander Daley, Hannah Elizabeth Daley, and Rachel Cynthia Daley; brother, Daniel Daley and wife, Hilda, also, of Manchester.
""Uncle Leo"" also loved being with his nieces and nephew: Heidi Rothrock, Elizabeth Rothrock DeLarge, Kristin Rothrock Brodeur, Dede Daley Warren, Dinah Daley Sullivan and Joe Daley
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport in the early summer. Details will soon follow.

Leo H. Daley was one of the funniest people I ever had the pleasure to work with. I still have some of the 'comic relief' that he passed around the office, in Boston in the 80's. He was an absolute gem.
I am so sorry for the family's loss - and it was merely going thru some momentos that I looked him up and found he had passed. May he rest in peace.

Cynthia and Toby,
I am so sorry to hear of Hayden's passing. You were all such a presence at Seabrook Beach while I was growing up. Hayden's father Leo was like a grandfather to me! I miss the entire Daley family! I was lucky enough to run into Danny on a plane coming home from Florida and subsequently he was nice enough to invite my husband and I to play golf with him at Essex. It was a real treat for me to spend some time with him while enjoying a beautiful golf course! Dan also pointed out Toby's house to me!
Please accept my sympathies. I would love to attend the memorial service this summer .

Love,

Marty Rogers Gurry

Leo Daley was a gentleman's gentleman. Always positive, humble yet sharp as a tack. Acutely aware of the financial world, always willing to serve others. My condolences to the Daley family; he will be missed.
