Mabel Crockett Obituary

Mabel Frances
Crockett, 105
FALMOUTH -- Mabel Crockett died at Falmouth by the Sea on Oct. 19, 2010. She was born on Feb. 27, 1905, in Riverside, Nova Scotia. She was one of six sisters and one brother and attended school in West Gore, Nova Scotia. She moved to Boston in 1922. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class from Chandler Secretarial School in Boston and worked as secretary to the President of Little Brown Publishing Company, a job she loved. Her fondest memories were of meeting all the authors who came into the office.
In 1928 she married Sherman K. Crockett and they settled in Arlington, Mass. During World War II she and a neighbor would go in to Boston to mend for servicemen who came to the USO. She was also active in neighborhood and community activities. Their daughter, Barbara, and son, George, were both born in Arlington and went to school there. In 1943 Mabel and Sherman bought Migis Lodge on Sebago Lake and moved the family to Portland. For 24 years they hosted the well-known and not as well-known. They were natural hosts and thoroughly enjoyed all of the friends they made at Migis. In 1968 they sold Migis Lodge and retired to Raymond where Mabel was active in the Raymond Village Library and the Semicircle of Raymond Village Church. Sherman died in 1978. In 1996 Mabel moved to Ocean View in Falmouth where she enjoyed playing bridge and pool. Proudly winning a pool tournament at 96.
She is survived by her sister, Marita MacDougall Greenough of West Gore, Nova Scotia; her daughter, Barbara C. MacDougall, her son, George W. Crockett and his wife Stephanie both of Portland; her grandchildren, Elizabeth MacLean, Maxwell MacLean, Margaret Snyder, Elizabeth S. Crockett and Amanda W. Crockett; her great-grandchildren, Samuel Jenness, Calvin MacLean, Erin and Sarah Speeches; and step great-granddaughter, Kera Snyder. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Andria MacLean Farrington.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at the Raymond Community Church in Raymond Village at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27.

George, one of my fondest memories of your mother was to have her help me keep track on my card during the Bingo games at Migis. I was only about 5 or 6 years old at the time. She was a wonderful hostess there. Treasure the moments!

My grandmother (Marge Hilb) worked with Mabel at the library for many years. She was so nice to us kids.

I first met Mabel 27 years ago when my oldest attended story hour at the Raymond Library. She was always pleasant and had such a wealth of information that she loved sharing. We hit it off right away since we share the same last name

Sorry to see that Aunt Mabel has passed. I am a grandaughter of Bernice Bubier one of her sisters. I had met her when my twin brother and I was little. I can remember her fireplace. She was an amazing woman and the family has such a long life span.

What a truly amazing woman. She obviously made a positive and lasting contribution in each community that she lived. 105 years, what an angel. Sherman has waiting patiently to see you once again. God bless.
