Madeline C. King, 93
SOUTH PORTLAND - Madeline C. King passed away Feb. 27, 2017. She was the wife of the late Leonard E. King Jr., of Atlantic Avenue, South Portland. She was born May 23, 1923, in Belfast, the daughter of the late Gerald E. and Mildred Ward Coggins.
She attended South Portland Schools, graduating from South Portland High School in 1941. She attended Northeastern Business College, and also studied piano under the tutelage of the late Frances Donell Grasse.
Madeline worked for a time at Bicknell Photo Service, and Porteous in Portland.
During World War II, she was employed at the South Portland Shipyard, in the yard hospital. At the termination of the war, she worked for H.P. Hood, Inc., Sacony Vacuums, Oil Corp, and the Thomas J. Laughlin Co. as a comptometer operator.
She married Mr. King Oct. 15, 1949, and was married for 43 years until his death Nov. 10, 1992.
A summer resident, since 1970, of Orland, Madeline owned a cottage on Toddy Pond.
She was a member of the Elm Street Methodist Church since April 1937. She was a former member of the Thalia Circle at the church, and a former member of Anchor Rebekah Lodge of Portland, and the AAR8. In early life, Madeline was a member of the South Portland Rainbow Girls, an affiliation of Easter Star Lodge.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard; and Gerald, who was killed during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge; sisters, Helen Barnes, Geraldine Coggins, and Lois Coggins; and grandson, Bryan J. King.
She is survived by her three sons, Stephen G. King and wife Susan, of Portland; Thomas R. King and wife Leslie, of South Portland; and Philip L. King and wife Diane, of South Portland; three grandsons, Matthew, Kevin and Nathan; granddaughter Savannah; and great-granddaughter Hannah.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 4, at noon, at
Hobbs Funeral Home,
230 Cottage Rd., South Portland, followed by a reception at the Elizabeth Hobbs Hospitality Center. Interment will be at Forest City Cemetery at a later date.

My thoughts & prayers are with you in the loss of your Mom. I remember her well from Elm St. UMC and living in the neighborhood LONG ago. May memories bring you comfort and peace as you remember her. Bless you.
