Marion Crommie Obituary

Marion Elizabeth
Crommie, 96
WINDHAM - Marion Elizabeth Crommie, 96, died on April 30, 2015 in Portland . She was born in Portland on March 7, 1919, the daughter of William Z. and Lillian E. (Scott) Sylvester.
Marion grew up in Windham and graduated from Windham High School in 1937. After school she moved to Schenectady, NY with her sister, who taught her how to sew. While there she met Robert E. Crommie and they were married on May 13, 1940. In 1943, Robert went off to serve his country during WWII, and Marion moved to Mobile, Ala. where she contributed to the war effort as a welder, building ships at the shipyard. After Robert was discharged, they moved to Virginia, before they finally settled back in Windham purchasing the farm where she grew up in 1948. Using the knowledge that her sister taught her, Marion became a seamstress, and worked for many years at Porteous, Mitchell, & Braun in Portland, before working for the Harbor Shop where she retired in 1981. In her retirement, she never stopped sewing, making and altering wedding dresses from her home. Marion also enjoyed gardening, and was a member of the Cross Roads Garden Club.
She is survived by her three sons, Jason of Windham, Martin of Windham, and Edward of Mooreland, Ind.; eight grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and her sister Jane (Sylvester) Cox of Virginia. In addition to her parents, Marion is predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert in 1988, and four sisters, Winnie Higgins, Pauline Prout, Virginia Strout, and Eleanor Higgins.
The family would to express their appreciation to Lisa Denis for the kind and compassionate care she gave to Marion for the last three years.
A celebration of Marion 's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the family farm, 30 Cook Rd., Windham. Arrangements by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com.
