Golden, 22
ROME, Ga. -- Nicholas Scott Golden, 22, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Ga., after a tragic skateboarding accident. Nicholas was born on June 25, 1990, to Ann and Scott Golden in Dallas, Texas. He was a third generation University of Maine student studying geology and was the vice president of the Geology Club. His grandfather and parents also attended the University of Maine.
Nick was the captain of the Lamar High School Lacrosse Team in Houston in 2009. He also played Lacrosse at Bridgton Academy in Bridgton. Nick was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and ice fishing in the mountains of western Maine. He enjoyed four wheeling, snowmobiling, snowboarding and rock climbing.
Nick is survived by his girlfriend, Tina Ross; grandparents, Frederick and Nancy Sheenan of Sandwich, Mass., and Thomas and Caroline Golden of Bridgton; his mother, Ann Golden of Rome, Ga., his father and stepmother, Scott and Jackie Golden of Houston, Texas; his sister, Erin Golden; and stepbrothers, Grant and Blake Niccum of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by aunts and uncles, Jane and Mike Haley, Kate and Dennis Martinek, Mark and Cindy Golden, Brian and Elizabeth Golden, David and Patty Golden, and their children.
Nick is loved and cared for by all of his family and friends and will be sorely missed. His smile brightened even the darkest room, and he truly made the world a better place. He never met a stranger; he made everyone feel at ease. Tina's family will be forever grateful for the time that Tina and Nick were able to spend together. His sister Erin affectionately referred to him as 'NuNu.'
A celebration of Nick's life will be held with family and close friends on a favorite hilltop in Phillips. Daniel's Funeral Home of Rome, Ga., makes the announcement for the family.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the Bangor Maine Humane Society,
a cause he believed in and avidly supported (http://www.bangorhumane.org/, 207-942-8902).

Scott and family, we are so sorry to hear about Nick. I remember him as the little boy with a big smile and full of energy. It looks like he grew into a fine young man that I'm sure you are proud of. I remember working one day at your house in Dallas when Nick asked me if I would watch Jurassic Park with him. He was just a young lad at the time. He watched the movie very intensely. Obviously looking for reassurance he turned to me requesting my confirmation as he asked, “they really don't exist, do they?” You could see him relax when I told him “no they don't, they are extinct”. I also remember one December day getting a fax from Erin and Nick. It was a request sent to Santa. Unbeknownst to them they had sent the fax to Grapevine instead of the North Pole but I had a good time replying in place of old St. Nick. May you and your family cherish the good memories. Our heartfelt condolences.

Nick,
I will never forget your sarcastic humor that made me constantly laugh. I loved that about you and how it was so easy to get along with you. I'll never forget meeting you and thinking that I needed to become friends with you. You were always a really fun person to be around. I remember when we used to talk about our future business plans involving finding a ton of oil in Texas and somehow becoming mega rich. You were such smart person and I respected you a lot for that. I'll miss you.

Nick was the funniest person I think that I have ever met. UMaine was made a better place because of him. I remember how passionate he was about geology and how he made Danny, Andrew and I laugh until we couldn't laugh anymore. I don't think I've ever known a more beloved young man. Nick knew how to live and how to love. He was unfailingly polite and friendly to me, and so supportive and enjoyable and true a friend to my sons and all their mutual friends. Nick will live in many hearts forever... he made an enormous, deep impression during his short time on earth (maybe some extraordinary humans aren't earthbound for long...?) I went to The Bridgton Academy with Nick and over that year he became one of my best friends, and the news of his passing has really taken a toll. He was a great team mate, and an even better friend. It seems like just yesterday you, me, Palma, and Estes were sitting up in his garage apartment figuring out what to get into that weekend. You had a thrill and excitement to your personality that lit up every place that we went too, and it was your personality and spirit that made Bridgton fun and one of the best years of my life. Ill never forget that awesome weekend at Sunday River with Buck when we got snowed in. You will be forever missed, my heart goes out to your family and loved ones. I love you man, and I know I will see you again some day. Rest easy buddy.

Words cannot express our sorrow for what you must all be going through. But, I wanted you to know that your son Nick must have been a very special person as he made a tremendous difference in our son's life at UMaine this school year. I remember driving away from BA in Aug '09. As I looked back, my son was walking up the hill with his roommate-Nick Golden-2 complete strangers. Nine months later they walked down that same hill-as brothers. Nick became part of our family that year & we loved him like a son. I loved to hear "Mom-Roomies coming down this weekend!" because I knew that meant I would be greeted with the most beautiful smile & the big hug that always went with it. My family has struggled with Nick's passing & my heart breaks for Tina, Ann, Scott, Jackie and his siblings, along with the rest of the Golden family. We will keep you all in our prayers as you go thru these days & the days ahead. May God give you all the strength you need. We are so very sorry.

Nick, you were one of the good ones whose time on this earth was cut way too short, which will be a loss of many. As the phrase goes, only the good die young can not even begin to measure you and the impact you had made at such a young age. The memories Tina has will always be cherished, we as a family will be forever grateful for all the good times Tina had with you. You two had done so much in such a short period of time, from travel to hiking to concerts to spending time in Phillips to studying at UMO and making maple syrup, life was lived to the fullest while you were here with us.
