Roger Schmutz Obituary

Roger C. Schmutz, 77
NAPLES, Fla. -- Roger Clayton Schmutz died on Monday, May 17, 2010, at the age of 77, in Naples, Fla., after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
Mr. Schmutz, son of Charles A. and Helen R. Schmutz, was born in New York City. After graduating from Bates College, he earned a master's degree from the Columbia School of Journalism. He started out as a reporter at the Worcester Telegram-Gazette (Mass.) and soon moved to Standard and Poor's where over 26 years he rose to Group Vice President for Financial Publishing. He retired in 1982 and moved to the Maine coast.
Mr. Schmutz served on the board of trustees of Bates College for 31 years, playing various roles including Secretary of the Corporation. In 2004, he was awarded Helen A. Papaioanou '49 Distinguished Alumni Service Award for his extraordinary service to Bates. His love of the school is reflected in his quote on the college web site, 'the Bates attitude is, if you want to do it, do it! Do it with passion and enthusiasm, and if you develop talent and excellence, you will succeed, without feeling fettered by convention or attitude.'
For many years Roger and his wife, Elizabeth, enjoyed wintering in Marco Island, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Fleet); his daughter, Anne and her husband Donald Hovey; and his granddaughter, Lila.

Dear Mrs. Schmutz, I just heard today of Roger's passing, I am so sorry. I was his travel agent for many years, and then my husband helped to build your house in Marco Island. I am very sorry for your loss, he was a wonderful man, and that is what I will remember him as, kind and gentle..... Anita Ericson York

Elizabeth, Anne, Don and Lila, I fondly remember a time many years ago when you all so graciously took my Lilly to your Bailey Island house while I took my own trip. I have many beautiful pictures of that time with Rog sitting with her and looking like he was having a "dog moment".

I am glad Roger is now at peace and wish you all on your own paths to find that place.

Much love to you all,

Dear Elizabeth, Anne, Don, and Lila,
We are so sorry to hear of your loss, but grateful that he is in a better place now. What started out as just neighbors, resulted in a life long friendship. Can't say that about anyone else. Since I was 7, growing up on Meadow Lane, Portledge then Bates, holidays together, Christmas carols, vacations in Marco Island, all our weddings. Even when you left Mill Neck for Maine, we still always got together in Marco Island. I will always remember the pride and love Roger had for his family. He made no attempt to hide his pride of Anne (for good reason) and then for Lila. His loyalty to Bates was extraordinary and I will miss my fellow Bobcat who kept me in the loop about Bates. Thank you Roger and rest in peace.
Love,
Brad, Martha, Charlie and Kate
