WESTBROOK -- Ronald Bruce Harnois, 68, of Main Street, Westbrook, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, surrounded by his four children at the Barron Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Westbrook, the son of Robert and Irene (Beaumier) Harnois. He graduated from Westbrook High School in 1961 where he excelled as a runner on the track team. His nickname in high school became 'Chief.'
For many years, Ron delivered heating oil for his father's business, Harnois Oil Company and later became the dispatcher for Gray Oil Company. He also worked many years at S.D. Warren before retiring. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and St. Anthony's Church in Westbrook.
Ronald was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Faithful Grand Knight (3rd Degree) and Faithful Navigator (4th Degree). He was also a former President of the Southern Maine Oil Dealers and a member of the Eagles Club in Westbrook.
Ron enjoyed going to the beach, lobster bakes with his family, and family vacations. He also found joy in playing card games and taking bus trips with his father to Foxwoods Casino. Ron will always be remembered as a kind and gentle person.
He was predeceased by his mother Irene in 2006. Ronald is survived by his father, Robert L. Harnois of Westbrook; the mother of his four children, Joan (Gherardi) Harnois of Westbrook; a son, Christopher and his wife Kelly Harnois of Westbrook, three daughters, Janice and husband Steven Drew of Gorham, Carolyn and Michael Starks of Bangor, and Stephanie and husband Craig Aham of Westbrook; a brother, Robert L. Harnois Jr. and his companion Jan Sullivan of Auburn, a sister, Debra Harnois of Westbrook; and 11 grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. Interment will be private with family.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staffs of VNA Hospice and the Barron Center for the care and compassion they showed to Ronald during his illness.
