Rosemary Rosie Shove Shiras

Rosemary Shiras Obituary

Rosemary Rosie Shove Shiras, 82 ORR'S ISLAND -- Rosemary Rosie Shove Shiras, of Orr's Island, who promoted the curriculum of Native studies for the State of Maine public schools, died suddenly on Friday. She was 82. Rosie was a passionate advocate for social justice. Since 1991, Rosie was an active volunteer with the Wabanaki Project of the American Friends Service Committee. In that capacity, she was instrumental in promoting the implementation of state law L.D. 291 which required all K-12 social study teachers in the State of Maine to include the study of Native peoples in their courses. Rosie Shiras was born in Syracuse, N.Y. in 1925 and grew up nearby in Cazenovia. Rosie's grandparents, with her father, John Shove, then a newborn in a basket, first came to Orr's Island in 1894 on the steamboat from Portland. Rosie spent virtually every summer of her life on the Island until 1990 when she became a permanent resident. Rosie taught children with learning differences from 1970 - 1990 at the Kingsbury Center, the elementary school systems of Hudson and Concord, Mass. and The Fenn School also in Concord. During this time, she earned a Master of Education degree from Godard College in Vermont and her text book, entitled Paragraph Writing Made Easy, for elementary school students was published by Scholastic Books in 2001. Rosie was a gifted teacher who was loved and long-remembered by her students. Rosie's motto for her students and herself was Take Courage, and she lived by that motto indefatigably. She is survived by her husband, Peter, of Orr's Island; her daughter Natalie of Lee, Mass., and her son Peter, Jr. of Lutherville, Md.; and four grandchildren, Alexander of Denver, Colo., Anne of Lee, Mass., and Tess and Chloe of Lutherville, Md. A celebration of Rosie's life followed by a potluck supper will be held at the Bailey Island Library from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 28. Condolences can be expressed at www.brackettfuneralhome.com

She was an extraordinary women. It's hard to believe she's gone.
There is much that could be said about Rosie-all superlatives-but as I write this I particularly remember the timbre of her voice; rich and full.
My heart goes out to Peter, Natalie, and Petes.
Being her friend was one of the blessings of my life

Rosie lived at our house briefly when I was a child. Her happy disposition brought light to my life at a time of tumult in my own family. She was a friend to my Mother during her divorce and a friend to me during the recovery from that experience. She helped me learn about myself and gain confidence as I grew. She was a rare jewel.

Rosie,
You remain a model of courage, humor and enthusiasm, a person to emulate. Your presence in my family's life is a gift, one cherished.

Would that we each could remain as vibrant as you until we are called.

Thank you for sharing your many talents with us. Orrs is not the same without you, but know, Rosie, your spirit lives in those of us you infected with your excitement, you laughter and your integrity.

Rosie

One of my earliest thoughts of Rosie was how she and the rest of

the Shove clan treated us like family not just the caretakers!

Sundays we went to church together in the morning and then all

met for Sunday sing at one of the back shore cottages. When

working during the week there was always a treat to be had. The

lobster bakes on the shore where all good. Even the one where

Bern accidentally put a piece of old piling in the fire and all

the food had a tinge of creosote to it.

I always loved to hear about Rosie and Pete’s exploits. One of

the times Pete went out lobstering with us, after a trip to Ice

Land (I think), and wanted the sculpens that where in the traps.

A couple days later Rosie had us over for lunch and served fish

stew. Yep you guessed it, Sculpen stew. It was pretty good much

to our surprise! Taught me first hand, what one man thinks of as

trash is anothers food.

Rosie would always stop by to see how we were doing. During the

Winter she would call. She was a straight shooting, caring

classy Lady.
