Russell Harry Gagnon

Russell Harry Gagnon, 66 WESTBROOK -- Russell Harry Gagnon, 66, of Westbrook, died Jan. 19, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Westbrook on Oct. 18, 1942, the son of Bernard E. and Pauline (Phinney) Cilley. He attended local schools and was a 1961 graduate of Portland High School. As a young man, Russell was a Boy Scout with Troop 5, and was a member of the Portland Boys Club. He was a track and field star at Portland High School, winning several track awards in his junior and senior years. Russell served his country in the U.S. Navy. He also worked as a contractor for the Maynard Waltz Plumbing Company. Russell loved sports, especially auto racing, baseball, and football. He volunteered at the Preble Street Resource Center and the Salvation Army in Portland. He loved going to area lakes, especially Sebago and Crystal Lakes, and loved to read the Sunday Telegram from cover to cover every week. Russell was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Old Orchard Beach. Russell was predeceased by a son, Jason Russell Gagnon on Sept. 19, 1996; and by his grandparents, Alfred and Gladys Gagnon and Elwyn and Lucy K. Beane. He is survived by his parents, Bernard E. and Pauline (Phinney) Cilley of Portland; a sister, Ponda Stanhope and her husband David of Poland Spring, and two brothers, George W. Gagnon Jr. and his wife Frances of Gorham, and Wayne E. Cilley and his wife Debra of Waterboro. A graveside service will be held in the spring.
