Ruth and Frank were two of our best friends in Portland since our arrival here in 1979. Ruth brought dinner to us and our young children on our first night in an empty-kitchen house. Recently we reminded her of this and she said, "Did I do that?" Her kindnesses were not performed for show; to her they were as natural as breathing. We spent amusing New Years Eves and hilarious winter solstice parties with the Coffins, as they generously drew us into their circle of wonderful friends. They introduced us to The Profile Theater (now Portland Stage Company) and we kept dinner and theatre subscriptions together for decades. After Frank's death our lunch or phone visits continued, with Ruth catching us up on news of her large family, remembering everything, and asking us about ours. She always knew what was going on in the world, and had opinions. Ruth had had many responsibilities as the wife of a judge and statesman, and in those realms she was the same person: smart, curious, kind. She had infinite gifts of mothering and companionable conversation and we can't imagine her absence. We have never known anyone to approach death so bravely and with such constant gratitude for a life well-lived.

My sister, Midge Bouvier, sends her condolences to the Coffin family on the passing of Mrs. Coffin. As most of you are aware, Midge was indeed part of the Coffin family having been the Judge's secretary for many years in Washington, Paris and at the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Portland. Midge is now in an assisted living facility in Lewiston, is in decent physical health but does have dementia. However, when we read the obituary, Midge said, "she was a very nice lady". She said that Mrs. Coffin would invite her over for lunch at times. And Douglas, that was very thoughtful of you to let us know of your mother's passing. As someone said to me upon the passing of my wife a few years ago, "life does indeed go on"! Our best wishes,
Abby Huntoon

Dear Coffin Family,
I am very sad that there is an empty space in our neighborhood - Ruth is gone. I miss knowing she is across the street. She was such a dear, warm, intelligent woman. I truly enjoyed going to visit her. She was always so informed about everything going on in her family, our community and the world. She was always interested in my activities as well. She loved Frank and you all so much and spoke of how happy her life had been. I wish I had known she liked Upwords: I would have loved to play with her. My heartfelt condolences to all of you.

Judy and I offer our condolences. Frank and Ruth have always been our model of the perfect couple. Although we are sorry to hear that she is no longer with us, we marvel at the beauty of her life. The memory of Frank and Ruth will always be with us
