Sally Kirkpatrick Obituary

Sally Means Kirkpatrick, 90
CUMBERLAND - Sally Means Kirkpatrick died peacefully at her home in Cumberland on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016. Born on May 26, 1925, the daughter of Leland G. and Sally Kimball Means, Sally graduated from Waynflete School in 1942 and from Pine Manor Junior College in 1944.

Sally served as a Red Cross nurses' aide at the Maine General Hospital from 1943 to 1947, and worked at the Martha McLean's Specialty Shop as an Assistant Buyer from 1967 to 1974. Sally was involved in a large number of civic and community activities over the years, including as an active volunteer for the United Way. She served on several boards, including the Maine Home for Boys, Catherine Morrill Day Nursery, and the Sweetser Home, and spent time as a trustee for State Street Church where she was a longstanding member.

Sally was predeceased by her first husband, Dr. Howard R. Ives, whom she married in 1947 and who passed away in 1965. In 1974, she married William B. Kirkpatrick, who passed away in 2010. Sally was also predeceased by her two brothers, Leland G. Means Jr. and Richard K. Means.

She is survived by a large number of people who loved her, including her children, Rollin Ives(Linda), Sydney Ives (Sam Merrill), Sally Decatur (Ken); her stepdaughters, Rev Martha Kirkpatrick and Alice Kirkpatrick (Richard Connelly); her grandchildren, Katy Rand (Rick), Elizabeth Derrig (Anthony), Ben Merrill, Alison Merrill, Lucas Ives (Sonya) and Jacobsen Ives; and seven great-grandchildren, Celia and Natalie Rand, Quinn and Simone Derrig, Micah and Kai Merrill and Adrian Ives.

Sally was very active throughout her life and continuing until her death. She particularly enjoyed tennis and golfing at the Portland Country Club where she was a longstanding member, her weekly bridge game with longtime friends, boating on Casco Bay, spending time at the family chalet at Sugarloaf and most of all, attending and hosting family gatherings.
