Sandra Snow Obituary

Sandra Jane Stroud Snow, 79
PORTLAND - Sandra Jane Stroud Snow, 79, of Portland, passed away early on Saturday March 26, 2016, in the company of her loving family after battling cancer for over a decade.
She was born the daughter of William Dicker and Georgette Couper Stroud on Feb. 9, 1937, in Watertown, Mass. She lived in the Waban area of Newton, Mass. for a brief time before moving to Cumberland Foreside, and then to Falmouth.
Sandra attended Waynflete School in Portland from grade school until she graduated in 1955. While there, she made life-long friends. She attended formal and informal alumni reunions and events. She spoke fondly of a play production in which she participated called "Ladies of the Mop."
As a teenager Sandra met her future husband, David Payson Snow, at a beach party on Waites Landing in Falmouth. Sandy was an avid sailor, out of the Portland Yacht Club, and according to friends, was an excellent captain. Under her leadership, her team came in third place in the National Championships, Lightning Class.
Sandra attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where she studied textile design. She was married to David Snow on New Year's Eve, 1956. She was devoted to her family, raising five children and helping in the upbringing of her 13 grandchildren.
Sandy was also active outside of the home. She volunteered at The Episcopal Church of Saint Mary in Falmouth, where she was a member of the altar guild and a Sunday school teacher for many years. She worked for The Visiting Nurse's Association in Yarmouth. She taught at both Pine Grove School and Winfield House in Falmouth. Sandra continued her art studies at the Portland School of Art. She served on the boards of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Maine, the Maine Children's Theater Museum, and Cumberland's Dollars for Scholars.
Sandra was an artist in the true sense of the word. She sculpted the lives of all whom she touched. She instilled a sense of humor, empathy, understanding and kindness in all. She was an inspiration to everyone whose lives she touched.
Sandra was predeceased by her parents; her brothers William and John Stroud, sisters-in-law Connie Stroud, Lorraine Stroud and Judith Benoit, and brothers-in-law Authur Benoit and Roger Snow.
She leaves behind her loving husband of 59 years, David Payson Snow of Portland; her children, Kitsey Snow and her husband, Tim Nuland of Ridgefield, Conn., CDR. Richard Snow, USNR (ret). and his wife, Lori of Yarmouth, D. Robinson Snow of Portland and his wife Sarah, Mary Snow, EdM. and her husband, Ross FitzGerald, EdM. of Watertown, Mass., LTC Adam Snow, USA (ret). of Bridgton and Washington, DC.; sister-in-law, N. Lee Snow of Falmouth;13 loving grandchildren; many nieces, nephews; caregivers, and beloved ones not mentioned by name.
There are no visiting hours scheduled. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service that will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. in The Episcopal Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Falmouth, with a reception to follow at the Parish House. Interment will be in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth. On-Line condolences can be given to the family at www.lindquist funeralhome.com.
Sandra was an avid gardener, loved flowers, and would love to support all the local florists in her memory. These may be delivered to The Episcopal Church of Saint Mary at 43 Foreside Road in Falmouth, ME 04105.

Dear Mr. Snow and family

We were terribly saddened to learn that Mrs. Snow passed away. Your time in Falmouth at Terison Drive was short. We still call your home the "Snow's House". While we did not get to know Sandra, we knew she was incredibly strong and courageous in her battle with cancer.

We all enjoyed your company and seeing you outside taking care of the house or walking each day. Through those conversations, you kept us apprised of how you both were doing. We were there to help then and even more so now that David has lost his amazing wife and the Snow family a mother.

We pray for you David and your family's safekeeping especially in these sad times.

Please reach out if you should need anything as we would like to help.

Peter, Lisa and the boys.

We are very sorry to read of Sandy's passing. She was a delightful person; and we feel lucky to have known her both through Preston's time coaching swimming at Greely , and during our years working with Dave at Merrill.
We are sorry we cannot attend the service, but will be thinking of Dave, Rick, Adam, and the entire family.
