Stanley Bennett Obituary

Stanley Taylor Bennett II, 64
FALMOUTH -- Stanley Taylor Bennett II, 64, of Falmouth, passed away on Feb. 23, 2011, in Scarborough.
He was President of Oakhurst Dairy for 28 years and most recently Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and Vice President of Strategic Planning.
Stanley was born in 1947 in Portland, the son of Donald Huston and Lucia Pond Bennett. He attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1965. After graduating from Tufts University, he went on to receive his law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1972.
Shortly thereafter he began working for the family business, Oakhurst Dairy, founded in 1921 by Stanley's grandfather, Stanley T. Bennett. He became President of the company in 1983. In 1999 he became Chairman of the Board after the passing of his father, Donald H. Bennett. His strong leadership and business acumen, as well as his drive to produce the highest quality dairy products, while also providing superior service, has been most instrumental in making Oakhurst the number one family owned dairy business in Northern New England. Four of his siblings and a brother-in-law also work at the Dairy. Stan felt a deep and abiding loyalty to his employees, customers, farmers, and consumers. Their loyalty to him through their thoughtfulness and support over the last eight months was a terrific source of comfort and joy to Stanley.
Over his lifetime, Stan devoted countless hours to many organizations. He was truly passionate about many, but perhaps most particularly, the environment. And like both his father and grandfather, he was committed to giving back to his community. Friends of Casco Bay, Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maine, Gulf of Maine Research Institute, and the Tidewater Farm Project were among some of the more recent recipients of his enthusiasm and energy. In years past, The Maine Historical Society, the Portland Tree Challenge, the Maine Audubon Society and the Iris Network were among the many organizations that were also very close to his heart.
Stan's other involvements included work with the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce, the Maine Medical Center, the Portland Club, the Woodfords Club, the Maine Bar Association, the Maine Dairy and Nutrition Council, the International Dairy Food Association, the New England Milk Dealers Association, Greater Portland Landmarks, Maine Genealogical Society and the Mayflower Society. He was also twice a Republican Convention delegate

and served on both the Falmouth Zoning Board of Appeals and the Falmouth Planning Board.
Stan's love of community was contagious within Oakhurst Dairy and employees followed his lead, voluntarily supporting such charitable organizations as the YMCA, The Iris Network, Boy Scouts of America, The Center for Grieving Children, The United Way, Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve, and the Salvation Army.
Stan also found great pleasure in his genealogy work. He recently completed and published a four hundred page volume chronicling the Bennett Family History.
He remained especially close and loyal to a group of friends who enjoyed their annual boat cruise and Sunday football games. Stanley will always be remembered for his extreme generosity and kindness to everyone.
Stan was an avid boater and loved his time on Casco Bay on the Lucia II with his close friends and family. More recently he discovered the joy of bird watching, which he delightfully shared with anyone curious enough to listen to each new discovery he made in his backyard and in the nooks and crannies of Casco Bay.
Stan is survived by his three children, Theodore, Colby and Sara Jane; and his former wife, Chris Arlander, all of Falmouth. Their incredible love and support were the most important part of his life. Also surviving him are his six brothers and sisters, Priscilla B. Doucette, Althea B. McGirr, William P. Bennett, Jean B. Driscoll, Mary Ellen B. Tetreau and John H. Bennett, their spouses; and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to Julie and Dr. Matt Dugan from the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine.
A time of visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Woodfords Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland. Private burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Dear Bennett family, please know you all remain in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. One of my fondest memories of Stanly was sitting around the supper table on Vaughan Street with most of you, Stan making your mom giggle with his antics. So sorry not to have known this wonderful man in adulthood.

My deepest condolences to the Bennett family and the employees of Oakhurst Dairy.

I have worked with the Stan and the Oakhurst family for 13 years as a vendor and will deeply miss Stan.

I continue to try and imitate his example of organization and human interaction. He left a great example to follow.

I smile to hear of so many others who had long friendships with Stan both business and personal.

He made it easy to like and respect him.

Words cannot express the sorrow felt by everyone at the State of Maine Cheese Co. at the passing of Stan. He was a great business partner, a terrific supporter of ours at the Cheese Co. and most importantly a warm and compassionate sole. Our thoughts are with all of the many that called Stan family. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Bennett Family-

While Stan's death was "expected" because of his illness, it is a shock nonetheless, because we all now feel the loss of such a vibrant, caring, and focused guy.

I first met Stan in 1993,when he agreed to serve on the Deering Oaks Master Plan Committee. His service was contingent on my agreement that he never had to stay past one hour in our meetings, because, he said, he was constitutionally unable to stay any longer. I agreed, assuming he would get engaged and stay longer than he said. But at our first meeting, at the one hour point, he was out the door. At subsequent meetings, I made sure we front-loaded the discussion topics that would benefit from his focused input...

He loved Deering Oaks and, as I recall, kicked off the Portland Tree Trust in the park, with pine tree seedlings given to all. I planted mine at Little Diamond Island and always think of Stan as I watch it grow in our yard.

My husband and I plan to honor Stan's memory and longstanding commitment to the park by planting a white oak in Deering Oaks this spring. Jeff Tarling will select the tree and location and we will coordinate with the family on a planting time.

I will miss Stan but will always carry a vivid image of him in my mind's eye.

Stan was a cherrished friend. A rare person who was fun to have as business and personal relationship for more than 30 years. Your tradition of family values and support of community will live on through your generosity. I will miss the boating and the lunches we shared together. You have left a great legacy and will be missed by all your friends here at CN Brown. A true thanks for all the memories. You will be in our prayers.

I have been thinking about all of you in the Bennett family for days now.
I don't know if anyone spent more time on Casco Bay than Stanley. We all know how generous he was, in ways that permeated every area of his life, and I imagine in some ways we'll never know. That generosity extended even to the Bay. I have heard some wonderful stories from folks who grew up here but had never stepped foot on a private boat and had never been out on the water until Stan took them out on his boat. Stan took many, many groups out on the Bay and cruised around and then took them to lunch at Great Diamond or Peaks or Chebeague. My favorite memories are of hanging out on the flying bridge with him, telling stories, discussing serious matters, and howling at jokes will poking around the Bay.
With great admiration and respect, I feel fortunate to have gotten to know and work with Stan, and I am most grateful to have become friends with this unique man.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

The Bennett Family is in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Stan was always a pleasure to do business with. I have fond memories of spending the afternoon on Casco Bay with our store managers, Dick White and Patrick Flannery on several occasions. He was a very positive influence to the business community.

STB II
Stan was a true friend. He loved his family, Oakhurst Dairy and the people and State of Maine.

Sandy and I were fortunate to spend a little time with him and his family one evening in Falmouth Foreside last summer. He was diving into the waters of Casco Bay with the enthusiasm of a teenager to join his family.
Those of us who knew us who knew him at Tufts and Zeta Psi will miss him greatly.
Our thoughts are with Ted, Colby, Sara Jane and Chris, and his siblings. We saw his sisters last summer when they returned from a day with Stan after his cancer treatment and shared the tomatoes of his garden!
Rest in Peace, Stan. We will miss you.

My Dad worked for Oakhurst for 38 yrs., with Stan as his last boss. Stan saw to it that my Dad's final years with the company were spent in a newly-created position that utilized Dad's talents in dealing with the public. Dad described Stan as fair and generous. My parents were privileged to ride on his beloved annual boat trip several times.
I also remember Stan's generosity in donating trees to be planted around the city. Losing him seems like an end of an era. He was a true philantropist. My love and sympathy to the family. You were kind enough to attend my Dad's funeral two years ago. Please know that I would be there if I were able.

I was very fortunate to consider Stan possibly my best friend for over 50 years. We went out to breakfast a few days before his passing. He had done so well for almost nine months, not letting his diagnosis get him down for long, but also being a realist. I asked him if he was at peace, and he replied, "Anyone who knows me, knows I'll never be at peace." Truly said, and that was part of his gift that allowed him to do so much and to care about so many. I will hold to the thought that now, perhaps, you have found some peace, Stan. I will continue to see the glass as half full, and be grateful for the many years of loyal and lively friendship we shared.

"The work an unknown good man has done is like a vein of water flowing hidden underground, secretly making the ground green." ~Thomas Carlyle

Growing up in the Portland community, I was honored to have been "in class" with Stan. Although our paths never again crossed I was well aware of his integrity, business ethic, generosity and affection for family. His life made a difference, not only to those of whom the family is aware, but to an unknown multitude like myself.
He reminds me of another young man who once said, "Don't you know I must be about my Father's business?" In the very same fashion, Stan set out to do what was there for him to do, leaving a message we cannot help but hear in the manner of his living.

Thanks, Stan. I get it!

Stan was truly "A Man for all Seasons". Although I haven't seen Stan in over 40 years, I remember clearly the many days and nights at his house most of my junior year in high school. To the Bennett Family:

Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers in Oklahoma. I've known Stan since our days at Deering as a teammate, classmate, and friend. I've bumped into Stan many times when we return to Maine - on Casco Bay in his boat, at the USM lifeline gym, and at the Thanksgiving Day game (I don't think he ever missed one) with his close friends and he was always glad to catch up on events in our lives.

Portland and the State of Maine are better places because of Stan Bennett and his leadership will be missed.

Rest in peace with the Lord, my friend.
