Stephen Leon Obituary

Stephen P. Leon, 69
GORHAM -- Stephen P. Leon, born on Aug. 2, 1942, has passed away and left us on Feb. 13, 2012. His heart stopped its heavy rotation and it was time for him to shoot to another, more brilliant dimension. He was 69, but he 'looked 28.'
Formerly of Overbrook, Pa., and Ventnor, N.J., Stephen was living in Gorham with his beloved son, Max M. Leon II and Max's wife, Rachelle Leon. He was the devoted father of Sandra Judd, Max M. Leon II and Erin Leon. He is survived by his five beautiful grandchildren, Alexander, Aidan, Jack, Bella and Ryder. He is also survived by his two sisters, Sonia Gilbert and Ruth Weiman. He is survived by his ex wife, Theresa Riley.
Stephen was the son of the late Max M. Leon, conductor and founder of the Philadelphia Pops orchestra and President/owner of WDAS AM/FM Broadcasting Company and Minnie Leon. While in Philadelphia, he had a highly rated radio show on WDAS FM, and went by the name 'My Father's Son.' Leon's program quickly became the most surreal and popular with the counter culture in Philadelphia radio history.
During the 1960s, Stephen won numerous trophies racing his 1957 Chevy Bel Aire, 'Flying Trouble', which was the fastest car in its class in the State of New Jersey. He also won numerous physics awards and had a lifelong passion for metaphysics. Stephen was also the President of radio station KNTO in Wichita Falls, Texas.
In addition, he managed thoroughbred race horses which ran at the Atlantic City Race Track under the name of Ocean Stables. He challenged conformity; questioned religion and was a philosopher to many. He was a 'fierce individualist;' a constant advocate for the right of freedom of speech, especially on the radio.
Graveside services and internment will be held in Philadelphia, Pa., at Roosevelt Memorial Park on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at 12 p.m. He will be dearly missed.

You touched me in a sort of (spiritually conscience) way. I never saw your face, but I heard your voice. We were both young, and the world was new, and I thank you dearly. JF

Long before I worked at WDAS-FM, I met Steve in Atlantic City and he, Jay Mark and I became good friends. Steve and I then drove his brand new Corvette to California where he was going to school. As we drove across the country, people would wave at us...it was the height of the TV Show "Route 66",,,,,they thought we were the guys! Mr Leon (Max) told me, "I'm sending you to California to watch out for my son." I have many good memories of Steve, and I'm saddened by his passing.
