Susan Grover Obituary

Susan Patricia (Taylor) Grover, 41

CUMBERLAND - Susan Patricia (Taylor) Grover, 41, passed away peacefully at home with her husband by her side on the morning of Sunday, July 24, 2005. Susan's family is proud of the courage she showed during her battle with cancer.

She was born in Portland on June 6, 1964, the daughter of Albert and Kathleen (Bridges) Taylor. Susan graduated from Greely High School, Class of 1982. She attended the University of Southern Maine's Therapeutic Recreation Program and in 1985 traveled around the United States and China with “Up with People.”

On Dec. 16, 1988 Susan married Benjamin Grover of North Yarmouth at the Cumberland Congregational Church. They started their family of four in North Yarmouth, later building the home of their dreams in Cumberland Center.

The center of Susan's heart and soul were her children. She was an extremely devoted mother who never missed an opportunity to participate or volunteer in any and all of her children's numerous activities. She could be seen at every basketball game and school field trip there was. Susan's love and participation in 4-H, especially the Ossipee Valley Fair, was shared by all of her children.

She also dedicated her life to helping people. She worked at Brentwood Manor, St. Joseph's Manor; LL. Bean, and The Caring Place Child Care Center and most recently the Freeport YMCA in Adaptive Services. She put smiles on all the faces of those with whom she worked. Susan was also a volunteer and licensed EMT for the Cumberland Rescue Department for 23 years. She was also a Certified First Aid and CPR Instructor.

Susan is survived by her husband of 16 years, Benjamin; children, Lee, Molly, Tricia and Meagan; mother, Kathleen Taylor; sister, Judy and her husband David Gagnon; brother, Jeff Taylor; Benjamin's parents, Alwin and Sandra Grover; 16 nieces and nephews; and a large extended family,

Susan was predeceased by her father, Albert Taylor; and a niece, Allison L. Gagnon.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27 at the Tuttle Road United Methodist Church, 52 Tuttle Rd., Cumberland. Interment will be private.

Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.

Memorials may be made in her memory to:

I was a former Greely classmate of Sue's and she was a wonderful, caring person. She always had a smile on her face. I moved away from Cumberland 15 years ago and only learned of this sad news from my Father, Tom Joyce. I want to express my deepest sympathy to the Grover and Taylor families.

Our prayers and love go out to Susan's family. I just learned about her death. I am so very sorry. Susan cared for so many people in her short life and was the best mother; she was always on the go doing things for her children and family. I'll always remember her spunk and determination in whatever she attempted from youth through her marriage. She will be missed by many. So sad to lose her so young. With love, The Nasons

I have two memories of Suzie that I hold dear to my heart, and for me, clearly demonstrate who Suzie was - kind, giving and compassionate.

My first day of kindergarten was later in the year, because my family and I moved to Maine in the fall of '69. On that day, the teacher introduced me to Suzie, who offered to share her fat crayons with me. We quickly became "best-friends" for many years! My second memory is from just a few years ago when she came to my father's funeral. We hadn't spoken in years, but her hug and kind words settled gently in my heart. Since then, I have thought of her often, sometimes laughing at my memories of us, sometimes sad that I hadn't stayed in touch.

Today, the sadness is great. My heart reaches out to her family and friends as I pray that God will continue to guide them through their loss.

Peace be with you, Diana

I was shocked and incredibly sad when I learned of Sue’s passing. Sue and I were friends at Greely and the news has made me feel very nostalgic. I have been consumed with thoughts of Sue and my other friends these past few days. This has also made me slow down to appreciate how precious and fragile life is. I also have 4 children and I have hugged them silly for the last few days! Sue and I would often run into each other at the schools or around town. She would always wave and flash her big smile. It was so good to see someone from my life BC! Ben, Lee, Molly, Tricia & Megan – I am so sorry for your loss. It seems so unfair. Sue was a very special person and will be missed by many. My thoughts are with you. (Oh, btw, we have a dog named Bear too!)

I was shocked and saddened to see of Sue's death in the paper. Sue and I were very close as teenagers before marriage, jobs, and children came into our lives. Even though I had not seen Sue for several years I still considered her a very close friend. She was the matron of honor in my wedding, and I was in her wedding. She could always make you smile and laugh. The world has lost a bright star in her passing.

Sue was such a lovely woman with a delightfully bright, heart warming smile. We have many happy memories of her over the years...from Ben and her wedding, working on events together in town, having long chats, to seeing her a couple of weeks ago at Toot's with her colorful hat on and that wonderful smile on her face. We will miss her!

Just remember she is in a better place with no pain and is watching over each of you from above.

Our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to Mrs. Taylor, Ben and their children, Al and Sandy...along with all the rest of the family who were always there for Sue, Ben and the children.

Much Love,

Marla McEwen

I was very saddened to see Sue's obituary in today's paper. I met Sue at USM and often socialized with her outside of the classroom. I have not seen Sue in many, many years and did not know her as a mother but I do know that she must have been a great one. My heart felt condolences go out to her family and those who loved her, especially her children.

We wish to extend our thoughts and prayers to all the people that Sue touched through her life. To her family and her friends. Lives were enriched and trully brightened by knowing her. If we could only strive to be a mother to our children like she was hers. She will be missed, but her gift of love and kindness in this world will spider web out and continue to be shared in the lives that she touched just by being her. God Bless her family and may God bring you peace in the days and months to come.
