Virginia Jordan Obituary

Virginia Emily Jordan
CAPE ELIZABETH -- After a period of failing health, Virginia Emily Jordan passed away on Sunday in her home with her children at her side.
She was born on April 25, 1926, in Dover Foxcroft, the daughter of Aubrey and Mabel (Edgecomb) Merrill. She was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Stanley and Inez (Dearborn) Merrill upon the early death of her father from polio.
After graduation from Foxcroft Academy, she attended nursing school at Maine General Hospital in Portland. Her future career was put on hold when she married her soulmate, Raymond Eveleth Jordan II in July 1945. Together they made a home in Cape Elizabeth and raised five children.
Ginny returned to nurse's training when her children were grown and spent many years tending to the care and needs of others at New England Rehab, The Jewish Home for the Aged, Maine Medical Center, and working for personal physicians. After retirement, she continued giving of herself by volunteering at the Cape Elizabeth Home, the CE United Methodist Church and the Portland Soup Kitchen.
Until the last few months, she was a regular on two bowling leagues. No one could match her pace on her daily walks across Crescent Beach with a pocket full of dog biscuits.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Eveleth Jordan; brothers, Dwight and George Merrill, and sisters, Fern Clendenning and Shirley Parker Redman. She is survived by her daughters, Sally Jordan of Kennebunkport, Susan Lind and her husband Bruce, and Sandra Jordan of Scarborough, and her sons, Stephen Jordan and Scott Jordan, both of Cape Elizabeth. She is also survived by her sister, Miriam Froebel of Texas; special sisters-in-law, Frances Banks of Mars Hill, Clara Appleton and Audrey Jordan of Cape Elizabeth; her grandchildren, Robert and Richard Tinsman, Patrick and Shawn Tinsman, Kevin Lind; and eight great-grandchildren; with gratitude to special Hospice caregiver Addie.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2, at the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church. Interment following at Seaside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth.

Sally and Family, We became neighbors in 1959. The very first time I met Ginny , I knew she was a very special and unique lady. My prayers go out to each of you , now and during your search for peace, comfort, and understanding. Virginia Jordan was one of God's Angels -born here to influence the good in all who knew her. I will always remember, and be greatful for, how much she did for my Mom and Dad across the street. Thank you. God Bless each of you. Michael Brown

Sally and family, I am so sorry to hear about your mom. I remember her well when I would visit you way back in our childhood. She was such a sweet lady. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire family.

I worked with Ginny at Internal Medicine Associates on Vaughn St. Those 8 years were some of the best years of my life... We really were like family. Sadly I have not seen her in a few years, but think of her often. I was just saying to my kids in June we should go to CE to pick strawberries and we could drop by to say hello... We didn't go, but I really wish we had now... Love you Ginny!! Will miss your amazing smile and Her giggle like crazy!!! Hugs to the family.

I was a patient in Maine Medical Center
in 1983 for two months. Ginny was in charge of my room. The daily personal attention this amazing lady devoted to me during my entire stay truly endeared her to me and all our family. She made every day better than the day before. We will forever treasure her memory
